Vaccines are a safe way to prevent viral infections. In this lecture we discuss examples of how different types of vaccines work, including inactivated vaccines, subunit vaccines, and replication competent, infectious vaccines. These concepts are illustrated using vaccines for poliovirus, influenza virus, hepatitis B virus, human papillomavirus, yellow fever virus, and dengue virus. We also discuss some of the many experimental vaccines that are being developed for SARS-CoV-2 virus.
