The other ongoing pandemic is AIDS, caused by HIV-1. This virus jumped from chimpanzees to humans in the 1920s but was first detected in humans in Los Angeles in 1981. Since then this virus has infected and killed millions. In this lecture we discuss the origin of HIV, how it was discovered, the pathogenesis of infection, and prospects for prevention and cure.
