As someone who just accepted a position on a pediatric hematology/oncology unit straight out of nursing school, this was super helpful information and helped calm my nerves a little bit!

You called a code blue for sepsis? Your hospital didn’t have rapid response? In our hospital, code blue is only if a patient is pulseless or not breathing. For acute mental status change/sepsis we would call an RRT.

is it mandatory to major in nursing for this career?

Yes! You need to get your Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), and then you must pass the NCLEX-RN exam to become a registered nurse. After that you can work towards working in a specific specialty (like pediatric oncology) by enrolling in a residency program with a hospital. Hope that helps :)
