The #NationalMuseumPH presents this virtual tour of “Binodbodan and Pinilian: Shared Textile Traditions among the Cordillera People” at the Cordillera Regional Museum located at the Philippine Veterans’ Affairs Office Compound in Kiangan, Ifugao. It is the 4th Hibla ng Lahing Filipino Regional Gallery, in partnership with the Office of Senator Loren Legarda and the Save The Ifugao Terraces Movement, Inc.
The exhibition focuses on the similarities between the materials, colors, techniques, designs, embellishments, and forms of Cordillera textiles through time-from bast to hand-spun cotton; from the introduction of bonel (acrylic yarn) and poly-cotton to the revival of organic cotton and natural dyes; from plain stripes to complex binodbodan (tie-dye) and pinilian (supplementary weft); from patterns and embellishments shared by the different groups or exclusive to a particular community, status, or occasion to the re-creation and re-appropriation of the traditional and modern aesthetics of contemporary times. The region's woven artistry has come a long way as the people continue to preserve and transmit their cultural traditions.
The gallery was inaugurated on 30 April 2022, with the ceremonies graced by National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts, Eric “Kidlat Tahimik” Oteyza De Guia, and NMP Board Chairperson Luli Arroyo-Bernas. Also present were NMP Director-General Jeremy Barns, Kiangan Mayor Andrei Raldis A. Bulayyungan, exhibition co-curator and Chief Operations Officer of Save the Ifugao Terraces Movement, Inc. Mr. Marlon Martin, and representatives from the Ifugao community.
This production was made possible by the National Museum of the Philippines with the kindness of the Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance Company for allowing the use of a Bayanihan record, “Ifugao Festival Dance.”
