Visegrad Castle was built 43 km from Budapest on a high hill, on the South coast of Danube River.
Visegrad (Vyše-hrad) is a Slavic word and its meaning is ‘high castle’.
The history of the castle dates back to the Roman Empire; it was a strategic military base to stop the raids from the east.
After Slavs settled, the area was named Visegrad, and in 1009 this name was mentioned written for the first time.
The castle was destroyed during Mongol invasion, later rebuilt by the King of Hungary IV. Béla.
The castle became a royal palace after 1320, and was used as a base by the Kings of Hungary until Ottoman invasion in 1544.
After invaded by Habsburgs in 1684, most of the city and the castle were destroyed and lost their significance over time.
Nowadays, Visegrad is a touristic area and has one of the best landscapes in Hungary. You can enjoy the beautiful scenery of bending Danube and lush mountains.
Inside the castle, you can see the replica of the holly crown of the Kings of Hungary. There are also exhibitions about the history of the castle, medieval guns and hunting.
