I think we all like a certain amount of customer service but when i'm on holiday in a foreign country i tend to take it as it comes and of course politeness goes both ways. The type of service i do like though is when it comes in a friendly way and not forced as part of their job.

Never had any issues with the service i received at any eatery, farmers fruit and veg stalls or shops, during my stay in Malta. I didn't eat where the tourists eat thou, i ate at local level at the Bucci clubs which are also far cheaper than the eateries in the tourist areas, great service too and the food is great.

As someone who has worked in retail and catering service in Malta, the reason you felt it was bad is most likely because they're being paid 4 euros an hour to work 13 hour shifts in the sun.

Im American but once lived in London. Been to a lot of Europe already but plan to see Malta next year. We recently went to Croatia and absolutely loved it there. However were shocked by the really bad customer service especially in restaurants. If these people worked here they'd be fired after the first day. Took it in stride as a cultural difference. Will just assume Malta will be the same way

Apart from Pastizzis , because of the Sicilian connection the Maltese eat a lot of Excellent Pasta and Pizza. There is a shop on Gozo that sells high quality different Pastas for cooking. Up the steep hill at Rabbat/Victoria is a Sicilian shop that sells the best Sicilian Ice Cream . Maltese also love Rabbit and Tuna . As a Result I eat my sandwiches Maltese style . Although they eat theirs in a thin kind of Stotty bread. I have Warburtons Milk Roll with Tomato Relish spread along the bottom piece of bread , then Tuna finely spread then sliced olives and scallions on top of the Tuna . I couldn’t eat my Tuna any other way now except Maltese style. .

Been to Malta several times over the years and never had a problem with the locals or customer service. I will say one thing though, the Maltese bus drivers and other road users are crazy! Customer service?? We've just come back from Malta and found no problem at all with it. it was nice to not have the patronizing "enjoy your meals, is everything ok, have a nice day" every 2 minutes. We were just left alone to eat our food in peace. If you treat people with respect you'll get it back, but treat them as your servant, well.................

I'm going to Malta very soon in a few months (for pre-winter short hols):). I think that customer service in Malta is generally similar to the rest of mainland Europe. It should be okay if you are European. Customer service in America is another world out there though which I am not a big fan of. I dislike it when waiters are hovering around me the whole time, asking if I like my food, if I enjoyed it, blah blah blah. It's so invasive in my opinion. I want to be left alone when I eat and will prefer to wave to a waiter if I need something. I also don't like the tipping in the US which I understand is part of the system there. In Europe, tipping is not mandatory, it's up to you and most people who prefer to tip, just round the bill off (usually giving about 2-3%).

I'm in Malta right now in January and it's freezing cold, and night time is really bad, there is a constant cold wind blowing right now. Anyone with a lung condition like asthma might find it hard to breath hear at night in January. Prices in the supermarkets is really expensive, 2 to 3 times the prices of UK. The McDonald's in St Julian is the most expensive one I've ever been to in the world. The pavements in the area I'm currently staying in is awful. Most people are forced to walk in the road along with the cars. There ate potholes everywhere and the most construction work over ever seen anywhere. I don't recommend staying in St Julian area as of January 2020. Plan to visit other parts of Malta, which are hopefully much nicer.

Yes, Malta service and manners are really strange, both public service, and hospitality. Public transport is not keeping time table, but very cheap if you have local bus pass. Small shops have up to 300% higher prices for groceries, and you won't find fresh fruit and veggies, unless you go to supermarket (Lidl etc). I do recomment to try local pastry, bread and cakes.

Hi. It’s tough for me to answer because I am not Muslim so my perspective is different and therefore probably affected my experience. Since I am Italian (while I know that’s not a religion) I noticed more the Italian influence in Malta. I hope this makes sense. I wouldn’t want to offer advice on an experience that I didn’t have or try to observe while there.
@brothersman524

I might be able to help here - I am Muslim, born and bred in England. I can definitely say it is Muslim friendly with many Halal eateries in St.Julians and Sliema. There is a mosque in Paola which is a few miles south of Valletta. And you won't get ostracised there. Just don't stay in Paceville which is a party area. Many places to explore and do like Valletta, the 3 cities, Gozo, Blue Grotto, Great Harbour Cruise from Sliema, Spinola Bay in St. Julians, Temple of Qim, Dingli Cliffs, Mosta Dome, Mdina and St Pauls Bay. Going to Comino to see the Blue Lagoon is nice but I would probably avoid it because it is overcrowded and might feel out of place if you want to dress in a modest way. Hope that helps.

@@brothersman524 what hotels or areas would you recommend to stay in that has a large Muslim population? Halal restaurant's/food you would recommend? Is there a chance of being racially attacked? Safest way to travel and sightsee?
@brothersman524
3 жыл бұрын
@@JC-ce8uw I don't know where the Muslim population will be in Malta but I think Paola where is Malta's only mosque is located would be a good bet. I would stay in Sliema because you will get good hotel prices. Sliema Harbour is a good place to go for eating and you should find Halal food there or even in St. Julians especially around Spinola Bay (but just avoid Paceville which is part of St.Julians as this is a party area and full of drunks and dirty clubs). Probably best to hire a driver which would be a safe option but there are bus routes to get to the places you want to see. I have mentioned the sights to see in my previous posts but for planning I would do this: A Day in Valletta visiting sites - walking around it is easy (don't need a driver to take you around) Do the Great Harbour Cruise from Sliema Harbour which is 2 hours Book via hotel for a day trip to Gozo but don't include Comino (and The Blue Lagoon) in this trip as this might be a bit uncomfortable especially if you are wearing the hijab - you might a feel little awkward especially with many people swimming and so on even though Blue Lagoon is beautiful.. Hire a driver to take you to Mosta Dome, Mdina, Dingli Cliffs, Temple of Qim and down to Blue Grotto for a boat ride into the caves Do the 3 cities tour which you can book via hotel which is half day. I can't answer regarding being racially attacked because I haven't observed anything like that there - the locals have been very nice to us. If you do have this fear of being racially attacked for whatever reason then maybe best to stick to going to Muslim countries. I would advise you to travel with someone (preferably a Mahram) wherever you go or at least with a group of Muslim sisters

I honestly would not go anywhere in the shot you briefly showed for women not to go to Malta alone. Like anywhere else if you decide to go in a dark alley alone in a different country you do not know.... it is DUMB choice but that does not exclude a single woman travelling on her own.
