It's best to arrive just before sunrise, since the lighting will be best and you'll have the fields to yourself before they get crowded with tourists.
You can access the rice fields easily from a few entrances right along the street.
Just follow the signs that say “trekking," and you may or may not have to pay a nominal fee to enter.
The stone paths become muddy walkways through the fields, and especially in the mornings you'll encounter local farmers tending to the crops.
The complex irrigation system helped the Tegalalang Rice Terraces gain its UNESCO World Heritage Site designation.
