I had a Japanese friend who would go to Tokyo a lot and he would always bring back Japanese exclusive Super Famicom games, accessories, toys, magazines etc back to the US and my friends and I would always be so blown away. Then one day his rich parents invited us to go to Tokyo with them to go video game shopping at Christmas. I remember walking out of Akihabara station and being completely overwhelmed and blown away. Felt like I was on another futuristic planet walking around Akhibara. My senses couldn't handle it at 12 years old.

most of the text on the video game box seems to be in katakana, which is not too difficult to lean. What's even better is that katakana are generally words borrowed from foreign languages, like cake and pan. So depending on the game, you might be able to get a idea on what the game is based on that.

A little fun fact, game boy games, from original DMG to advanced, are ACTUALLY region-free! So you can happily play Japanese games on an American/European handheld with out that fear. Can’t say the same for the DS and up however!

8-bit Famicom cartridges (Dendy cartridges for those people who live in Russia) have 60-pin connectors when compared to their NES counterparts, which are sold in North America, Latin America, Europe and Oceania and have 72-pin connectors. To play 8-bit Famicom/Dendy cartridges on an NES or an NES cartridge on a Japanese Famicom/Russian Dendy, you need the right cartridge converter.
