Amritsar is a city with a storied and tragic past. The city was a hot-bed of violence after the 1947 partition and independence of India and Pakistan. Muslims were forced to leave their homes and flee for Pakistan just as Hindus on the other side were forced to do the same and flee for India.
It's a very sad story but the city is also home to a sacred place of worship for followers of the Sikh religion, the Golden Temple. The Golden Temple is an amazing place of tranquility within the craziness of the streets of Amritsar.
One of our favourite and memorable activities was the Wagah Border Parade and Flag Lowering Ceremony. I expected it to be just a bunch of locals yelling at each other from opposite sides of a chain link fence, but it's so much more than that. It's like a sporting event and rock concert all rolled into one... It's crazy, but choreographed and was a TON of fun to witness. It's something you need to see to believe. The videos don't do it justice.
Check out the next video from our family gap year. We head to the United Arab Emirates and Oman.
