My friend and I were there last week. What a great time we had. The five part documentary on KZitem is very interesting. It just blows my mind how the men dug through that mountain back in like 1851. They were some TOUGH, TOUGH DUDES. R.I.P GENTLEMEN. THANK YOU.

Fun times! Not sure if you had a chance to walk on the trestle over the river (there's a "walkway" that can be used as part of the catch and release right of way), but looking up the river, you see the remnants of the compressor building. Also, on the west side, right before the current portal, there's the original "Haupt Tunnel" entrance, though most of it is covered by fallen rocks at this point. Up on the access road, the ground has caved in, exposing the original entrance! Amazing history there! I've spent lots of time and made many videos about the tunnel. Even got to ride through it once!

I have hiked through it twice, since the Year 2000, once with a WB freoght train. I was about halfway, walking 🚶 west when I felt a change of wind blowing on my neck, before I ever saw the headlight coming. I hid, very well, on one of the niches as it passed. My second time, I had to slide under a closed west portal door 🚪.

The tunnel used to be double track so there is plenty of space if you were to go flat against the wall, but, there is a suction as the train goes through the tunnel and if you are standing against the wall you will feel it sucking against your feet. I am guessing the Helix is a track car If you were going to use it, go right after another the train goes through and follow it.

Nice; I visited that tunnel when several times on trips to North Adams. Once walked in about maybe a fifth of a mile & was surprised at how cold it got. And that was in the middle of July, one year. Never got to see a train go by, though! :(

There are loads of disembodied spirit voices in the background, if you take a little time to listen you will be amazed. I isolated several just within the first few moments. For example, at 2:36 one asks the other "If a train were coming, how much room would you say on either side you have?" "Not enough" whispers something from the darkness. Awesome!

Considering the tunnel used to be double tracked until about 1957, there would now be more than enough room to stand off to the side if one came through, so whatever you heard that you thought said "not enough" was bullshitting you, lol.

I love this stuff. I watch other videos of old rail lines to nowhere and tunnels. Saw a tunnel somewhere with huge doors that close after a train so that it vents well. From the stuff I looked up on this tunnel it used to have 2 lines side by side in it. We have a tunnel dug by hand in 1858 called the Missionary Ridge RR Tunnel.

My favorite parts are the high definition shots of complete darkness with the sounds of dripping water and the accompanying dark oration suggesting that it is a scary, ominous, and wretched place; and the comment about how dangerous it is for someone to be walking in the tunnel while they are walking in the tunnel; and then the part when train engineer waved at them. It helped lend an inkling of friendliness and hope to break the guarded dark tension of the whole video. But the "You are going to die very soon" graffiti comment was icing on the cake. You know it could have been a ghostly message from those 13 guys that died in the tunnel in the 1800's. The ghosts could have found some old spray paint can laying around and used their paranormal powers to spray paint a morbid message to the tunnel explorers... or it could have just been a regular living graffitier that had a bad day and was mad at his mom...This is great stuff! Bravo!

The 13 who died died in the central shaft dig when the building housing the steam pumps used to pump water out of the shaft during the digging of the shaft caught fire and the burning timbers of the building fell down the shaft atop of the 13 down inside it.

I don't know if the fans are controlled by air quality sensors or if they activate automatically when the block preceding the tunnel is occupied but I have seen where they start out with just the one exhaust on low and then it goes to high and I would guess they start out low when the approach block is occupied and once the train enters the tunnel and the signal in the tunnel lights up the fans kick into high

Hello BBISHOPPCM"s World, This was one nice video to watch and I have been to that tunnel about 20 times. I went on a train excursion through that tunnel with my grandfather, the late Charles J. Hull in the mid-1980's. It was with Mass Bay Enthusiast railroad who leased a train from either the MBTA of Boston Mass or Amtrak of the U.S.A. I just went there in November 2019 and we saw no freights due to a derailment in East Deerfield mass yard. Trains were okay to go through it after 5:30pm. We didn't ride a train, we just did rail fanning at the Florida mass side of the tunnel. (East Porthole? ) It is haunted and I did some ghost hunting there and got some nice EVP"S on My Android type Cell phone. You can watch trains at that end of the tunnel but don't walk on the train tracks. There is a good sized walking trail path up to the old iron electric power line trestle type poles. Those were used to by electric trains to aid the steam trains out of the tunnel without making a lot of smoke. I heard you are really not suppose to be near the tracks at the North Adams side of the tunnel. (West Port Hole?) Anyway, I really enjoyed watching this video and i'm glad you experienced the famous and spooky Hoosac Tunnel. I just subscribed to your channel. If you would like to subscribe to mine, look it up under Jeffrey Hull jr for my newer one. My older one is just under Jeffrey Hull. Take care and be safe. God Bless you and your family and friends. Happy Exploring and rail fanning. Sincerely , -- Jeffrey Hull jr. (Age 52.)

I have been there a few times, about 40 years ago some friends and I rode our motorcycles out that way and most of us went in the tunnel a good hundred yards or better, you know how that is, who is going to be the last one to turn around? I wanted to keep going but in the end my friend and I we turned around together, crazy days. Went there a couple years ago with my kids and we went in again but only about 100 to 200 feet, it is like being in a different dimension in there, look up how many people died in there, hint:a lot. It is called one of the longest graveyards for a reason and you can feel it if you think about it, God bless them all, there is a lot of story behind it and a lot of sadness, always have to be respectful of this place. Yes I know it’s trespassing but when you are there something calls you to go in it, and when you do you can’t wait to get back out. I met a man there who walked through the tunnel the whole way more than once, he says at some point you cannot see either entrance Which doesn’t surprise me, plenty of room to let the train pass he says, but no way would I do it.

The signal light should come on if the train is approaching from behind you. I don't think the signal lights if the train is coming towards you I don't know where the insulators are the blocks approaching the tunnel They may only be from the nearest grade crossing which is right outside of the tunnel or they may be wired to come on when the train enters the previous block which is 2 mi back I believe so the train would be entering that block and the signal light would come on if the train was coming from behind you Given the speed is 40 mph you would have less than 3 minutes to find one of those safety dugouts in the tunnel before the train reached the entrance of the tunnel and depending on how far in you are you would have about 2 minutes per mile if they are at the 25 mph speed. The average speed walking in a tunnel is about 3 mph so it should take about 2 hours to walk through the tunnel I do not know the distance from Ayer Massachusetts to the tunnel, or the distance from Mechanicville New York to the tunnel There is atcs on CP rails line through Mechanicville but there are currently no monitoring sites for the line because there are no volunteers who are willing to let us set up computers and radios in their homes or businesses to capture the atcs over the air data But I would say I have never seen them fleet trains on this line so if a train goes through there should not be another train going through for at least 2 hours so if you were going to walk this tunnel I would highly recommend you do it immediately after a train has gone through

While it is nifty to see inside the Hoosac, and also the history still existing around it, trespassing is what makes life hard for other railfans. Please keep this in mind if you visit again. On a lighter note, the slurry cars usually go from Vermont to Maine and are used in the paper making industry.

BBISHOPPCM's World You're right, It is your choice. Your choice to traumatize the train crew and make them live with the nightmares when they hit and mame/kill you. Its your choice to possibly cause a derailment if the crew initiates an emergency brake application on the wrong part of the grade inside the tunnel and physics take over. It's your choice to take first response and emergency resources away from people who need them not cause of their own choices when you get hurt. It's your choice not to consider others or the law. To me it's personal cause I've picked up bodies struck by a train, and had friends messed up for life as they watched someone die under their train. So you're right, it's your choice to be an ass.

The train moves at roughly 5 miles an hour due to the risks associated with moving through a tunnel that's known for rocks falling from the ceiling. It's a straight track. It's not like I was taking a "selfie" standing in front of a moving train (seen it... they're the ones you should be attacking). Did you see the video of the men riding minibikes through the tunnel? It's on KZitem. Go after them. And while you're at it, leave me the fuck alone. I am WELL AWARE of the risks associated with trains, as my father spent his childhood hopping trains and saw a man lose his leg, and I grew up in a house located next to an old switchyard. I'm a 33 year old man, for Christ's sake. Go be an angry old man at someone else (again - minibike video - go yell at them).
