Sitting several blocks west of the shores of Lake Michigan, in a neighborhood hosting a mix of low-rise, mid-rise and high-rise housing and commercial properties, a project called Ascent in Milwaukee is the world's tallest timber structure. At 25 stories (the upper 19 of which are mass timber) and 284 feet tall, the project showcases the elegance and simplicity of mass timber in luxury housing units. The scale of the timber structure, the size of the timber columns (look at the size of that column!) and the project team's painstaking attention to detail is a sight to behold.
In December, 2022, I had the opportunity to tour the structure as part of a WoodWorks hosted tour. About 40 attendees received tours from the gracious and hospitable folks at New Land Enterprises. We were able to see the fitness center, the indoor pool, one of the 1,999 SF 3-bedroom units as well as the events space on the 25th floor. Thanks to Jordan Komp of Thornton Tomasetti, Jason Korb, AIA of Korb and Associates Architects and Chris Johansen of CD SMITH CONSTRUCTION INC for sharing insights on the project. And always an honor to see Tim Gokhman, the project's visionary.
The name of this project - Ascent - to me is representative of more than just one building. In relative terms, tall mass timber construction on a global scale is still in its early years. And yet here we are with the world's tallest timber structure in Milwaukee. The "Ascent" of mass timber construction, and particularly tall mass timber construction, is a testament to the need for a better way to build, the solutions and benefits that mass timber can provide, and the tireless work and investments that so many crucial members of the mass timber industry have laid out. We are ever standing on the shoulders of giants. Onward and upward 🚀
