This Vlog episode details the experiences a full time power wheelchair user has when travelling to USA.
Andrew who has Muscular Dystrophy uses a mid-wheeldrive Electric All Terrain Electric Wheelchair from Magic Mobility is non ambulant and requires a hoist to be lifted from his electric wheelchair.
Andrew Travels to USA on a Virgin Atlantic flight , there was a disabled bathroom big enough for the onboard transit chair which was good as the flight was 7 hours and its very hard to sit in the same position for that long on an airline seat.
In Washington DC Andrew and his two travel buddies / carers visited the whitehouse, Lincoln memorial (which has a wheelchair lift). Whilst in DC Andrew tried out the Metro (underground train) and found it to be one of the most accessible transport systems he's experienced. When you understand the routes which were a little confusing. The video shows what its like for a wheelchair user to get on and off the Train.
The episode also showcases the accessible suite at the Holiday Inn Washington DC Capitol www.guestreservations.com/hol.... which had a train track running next to it with goods trains running throughout the night.
After two nights in DC we travelled on the Amtrak from Union Station to NYC. The video shows how a power wheelchair boards and exits the train.
When in NYC we stayed in Timesquare and show the accessible room (with roll in shower) on the 11th floor of the Intercontinental hotel in Time square www.ihg.com/spnd/hotels/us/en...
In NYC we tried to the subway down to lower Manhattan , it wasn't quite as easy as the Metro in DC but we managed ok, we visited several locations you'd see in the movies , such as Central station, the Empire State Building. Got lost in Central Park and had some battery issues with the wheelchair.
We also tried the accessible yellow cabs in NYC which were small Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles (WAV's) , unfortunately only big enough for wheelchair plus one person.
The video then shows getting the train out of NYC to JFK
