This concerto has always struck me as one of Vivaldi's greatest demonstrations of rhythmic prowess.

"del" is an Italian word, a contraction of "di" (by, of) and "il" (the). "Del Vivaldi" means "by the Vivaldi". It would have been normal for people to refer to "the Vivaldi" (and not simply Vivaldi) once he became famous. It is still common in Italian to do so, using the definite article before the name, but I don't believe it is common when speaking of oneself! In the earliest surviving manuscripts, he used to sign "di Don Antonio Vivaldi" or "di D.A.V." instead. Haydn also had his own peculiar signature: "di me, Giuseppe Haydn" (by me Joseph Haydn).

Also it is well known that he was nicknamed "the Red Priest" (used on the famous sketch by Ghezzi where the composer is not actually named); biographers latched on to this early on but there is really no indication of how widespread this was or if it was used in Venice (the sketch was made in Rome). Vivaldi's father was actually nicknamed Rossi, and probably Vivaldi too.

@@DelVivaldi There is some evidence that the nickname "Il Prete Rosso" was also used in Venice during Vivaldi's lifetime. To this end, I'm quoting two passages from W. Kolneder's monograph on Vivaldi (since I don't have the English edition, I'll use the Italian translation): 1) p. 20: "Nel 1721 un Francesco [Vivaldi] venne [...] bandito da Venezia in seguito a una rissa fra ubriachi, avvenuta all'alba di una notte di bagordi. La stessa sorte subì un Iseppo Vivaldi [...] per aver ferito in piena via, il 9 novembre 1728, il fattorino di un droghiere con cui era venuto alle mani. Nella deposizione di un teste che riconobbe Iseppo come partecipe al fatto, Antonio [Vivaldi] è citato con queste singolari parole: >"; 2) p. 38: "Nei Commemoriali manoscritti del Gradenigo si legge il seguente passo:

@@serenissimus1678 Thank you Riccardo. I was way off. These are old finds that I should have remembered. Looks like the myth is true, and biographers are not so fanciful about the "Prete rosso".
