If you never saw ending of the Jon Voigt starring movie 'Runaway Train", you missed the most amazing use of this piece. The Russian director used it to show the profound depth of the 'christ figure' bringing peace on earth by his defiant refusal to worship power. Soundtrack costs couple hundred bucks.

@William Fritz Yes. It’s a beautiful and touching scene, beautifully filmed and perfectly scored. Manny’s sacrifice leads to redemption and his friends salvation. Perfect Christ figure.

Those final scenes in the locomotive cab when the ambient racket and confrontations slowly fade and are replaced by this heavenly music are very moving, existential.

The phrase from 4:19 onwards. Phwoar what a bit of writing, to keep us going along with mostly the minor theme carrying on then pulling that ever so slightly positive chord out on reminding us of the wish for peace and happiness, then reducing the emotions of the musics to crumbs by squashing that brief moment of lightness with the minor theme again. Gets me every time.

Beautifully described, Michael.... I had a discussion with a friend as to whether despair or longing best characterised this stunning movement, that I have sung quite a few times as a Tenor.... it rips me apart every time as well, and I fight to keep singing....

Cuando las almas son grandes pueden expresar un halito de lo que llamamos Dios. Gracias Vivaldi por compartirnos ese halito que el alma necesita para tener paz en nuestro corazón.

It is encapsulated by TS Eliot's entr-acte "sermon" by Thomas a Becket in "Murder in the Cathedral"-- the price of our peace (or the chastisement, as AV -- and "Messiah" -- put it). The tension of the notes that pull and resolve is heart-rending. And yes, I've sung this 5 times and can't get through the awe-filled beauty of this movement.
