So-called mandatory spending is already more than half of federal spending, and it’s set to grow much bigger as more baby boomers use Medicare and Social Security. @paregoric4619

Gillespie is clearly talking about cutting spending at a level that would appreciably affect the total debt. Eliminating the federal government entirely, assuming outlays for the major categories of spending somehow continued, wouldn't accomplish that. No matter how good an idea it is to cut federal bureaucracy, it is not an approach that would save enough money to reduce the national debt. Even ending wars wouldn't do that, although reducing overall military spending drastically, such that we don't have a worldwide presence anymore, might help. As far as I know, Ramaswamy isn't suggesting that. On the contrary, he has said that debating cuts is the wrong way to think about it. We should focus on growth as the solution, according to him. Gillespie is pointing out that Ramaswamy is strictly speaking wrong about that, even if a pro-growth policy is desirable.
@paregoric4619

@@jaigi2 I'm inclined to agree, although I don't know enough to have a strong opinion. Eliminating the federal Dept. of Education and other forms of bureaucracy may well be an excellent proposal from Mr. Ramaswamy. The question I was addressing, however, is not whether the federal Dept. of Education should exist. It is whether eliminating it represents a spending cut that would reduce the total national debt. I think Mr. Gillespie argues well that Mr. Ramaswamy's story on debt reduction has some holes in it, even if his specific proposals are desirable on their own merit.

Reason is doing a disservice by their characterization here. He openly talked about the cuts that he would make to the administrative state. If they wanted a specific answer on how he would handle Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security, then they should have asked the question. The administrative cuts, plus an improved economy would greatly complement each other in fixing the national debt. Plus, he plans to cut the fed by 90%. All of this leads to severe fiscal solutions. Plus, he can’t fix the entitlements alone. He requires the two chambers of Congress to enact changes to them. He’s trying to focus on how the role of the executive can address these issues.

Growth is a big part of the answer. Let's consider federal debt as a special kind of debt. Federal debt doesn't have to be paid off, it is a legal ponzi scheme...it can be refinanced and rolled over forever....federal debt is more like an approximation of the amount of money the government has created to date. Cutting spending is hard. Sure, cut the really dumb stuff (like the federal Education dept) but at least hold spending steady and then grow and slightly inflate yourself out of overspending...this makes sense. GDP is 24Trillion, 4% of GDP is 960billion. Deficit spending is essentially printing money. As a rule of thumb, it seems prudent to limit ourselves to an amount of deficit (money printing) equal to the GDP growth we are seeing + 2% for targeted fiscal inflation. That means the deficit can be 4% of GDP for a 2% growth rate (deficit=960B). If we can get govt consuming less than the whole growth and inflation allotment every year of course that is always better as that frees up capital/labor/resources for the private sector to produce and innovate more which will in turn produce more..

The logical and ethical first step would be to give people currently not retired and have already paid into it, is to "opt out" of the federal safety net programs. A refund based either on low interest accumulation or inflation adjusted refund. A voluntary minor penalty to stop paying into a bad safety net that could easily be bankrupt before they retire anyway. Find other resources to support the remaining retires dependent on the system they were forced to pay into by allocating a percentage of military spending over to social security. Add a 50% tax on campaign donations for federal positions for example.

That just reinforces class divides and prevents any change from taking place. Term limits for all political positions and decreasing the fed is the way to get this budget and debt situation handled. The number 1 employer shouldn't be government. Decreasing military is popular until you consider the ramifications of it. Ultimately we'd be removing global influence and allowing any foreign adversaries opportunities to grab hold and make base in areas that could threaten the homeland. Defense spending needs to be pulled in and focused on where it is allocated. We shouldnt have 1 general for every 1400 troops. More like 1:2500/3000. We definitely need to consider having a greater partnership with the international community because all of our current friends have reached their peak, and most have already begun declining. No financial planner would ever suggest that someone with a massive spending problem "just earn more money" when they have a debt problem, not a revenue problem. Because in the long run, that doesn't work. Financial assistants try to pull people back to live within their means, not outspend their stupidity.

In your calculations you forget to take in account the debt to GDP ratio, which is how debt is measured (not in nominal amounts), and that ratio can easily go down even if the government is still running a deficit if nominal GDP is going up. However I still agree with you for two reasons : the cost of the debt will go up given the increase of interest rates ; cutting government spendings would actually stimulate economic growth

Why do you bring up Social Security when making cuts to spending? Social Security isn't a Pension its the American People's money that's force-ably taken out of our pay checks. The U.S Government quite literally stole that money and the American people are owed what is there's. You're not making sense, out of all the things to select to cut spending on you put Social Security on your list. Stop being disingenuous.

Some time ago I sent this quote to my readers Frederic Bastait---“I am a firm believer in the ideas of Malthus when it comes to bureaucrats. For their expansion in numbers and projects is fixed precisely by Malthus’ principle that the size of the population is determined by the amount of the available food. If we vote 800 million francs for government services, the bureaucrats will devour 800 million; if we give them two billion, they will immediately expand themselves and their projects to the full amount.”

RINO Trump repeatedly begged the federal reserve for QE (inflation) and negative interest rates. That does NOT happen in a booming economy. Thinking we will ever address or even meaningfully talk about the national debt and what it would take to reel it in is a piping dream. People in the US and frankly the world have determined that they deserve what they want, with little to no regard for what it takes to get there. France right now is a good example. The government raised the retirement age by 2 years and people are freaking out. Why was the age raised? According to the French government...they are losing money and have to. If the government turned around and raised taxes instead, I bet the reaction from the people would be the same. England is another good example. The NHS is falling apart but they refuse to even considered another alternative. The people would likely throw a fit is their taxes increased also. People in general are like an alcoholic and will not see or refuse to see how bad it is until we hit bottom and I don't believe we survive that fall.

The only politically feasible way to get the federal budget in line is to institute strict spending increase caps and make sure the Democrats and media (but I repeat myself) don't get away with lying about that by calling it a spending cut. Decreasing spending growth is not a cut. If you set the cap at 1% then as long as you grow at more than 1% you're debt issue will be solved.

If Americans cared about the Constitution and its limits on government, federal spending would be limited to what is specifically listed in Article 1 Section 8 of the Constitution, and the result would be a federal government that is 95%+ smaller than it currently is, with a budget to match. But Americans have contempt for the Constitution, which is why the people they vote for do as well.

Why only talk about cutting elder care entitlements and not other government expenditures? What about all the bureaucracies that are unconstitutional, wasteful, and tyrannical? The 3-letter agencies that rule over the population and won't follow due process? What about the ridiculous money being poured into higher education that produce only unsustainable student debt, a wildly unprepared workforce, and stupid "scientific" studies that do absolutely nothing to improve any lives other than the ones who pocket the money? I know the debt is monstrous and probably won't ever be repaid, but reforming entitlements must be done with wisdom and no government has that.
