A lot of people hate Viv for her attitude, but she’s a character I genuinely like. She’s very easy to get along with if you’re cordial and proper and she really does mean well, even if she’s a bit ruthless sometimes. Not only that, she also strikes me as an actually honest person, despite the Orleasian penchant for the Game. She lets you know where you stand with her and doesn’t jerk you around with lies and deceit.

I agree completely. Viv gets a bad rep, but I believe she's being sincere when she cares about someone. I will never believe she was with the Duke only for power and influence. There is too much caring and vulnerability on display when she speaks of him and later interacts with him. And anyone who loves someone to that extent can't be a *terrible* person.

I've always admired that no matter how much you may dislike Vivienne, she's not wrong. she picks her words and needs no provocation to be bitter (or rude) when it suits but she's never wrong. Even in a fantasy world, as a black, female mage, she's navigated all the hurdles life has thrown and came out triumphant due to the fact she has a grounded understanding of the reality of the world she lives in. my favorite line "I never worry my darling, a leash can be pulled from both ends" perfectly surmises her.
@masterfreeman117

Being black and female does not seem to impose any disadvantages in the Ferelden from what I remember. In fact, only women can become the Ferelden equivalent of a priest and a pope, if I recall correctly. Her being a mage was the biggest hurdle that life ever threw at her as far as I know and while I strongly disagree with the notion that she is never wrong, the way she gained influence and power through cunning and planning certainly deserves some respect.

@@masterfreeman117 whoops meant to reply the response direcrty above mine. Tagged the wrong response my bad! none of y'all played the female city elf origin in Origins or even listened to the dialouge about Vivienne entering the circle as a commoner did y'all? Lol Gender does play quite a bit into Origins and the expectations there. Ffs Sten doesn't even understand the concept of a female warrior because gender isn't determined by genitals or gender presentation under the Qun but by job title. Like gender is discussed in Origins quite explicitly. Vivienne has faced obstacles due to her gender for sure. Race is a tad trickier to talk about in DA due to the fantasy racism elements with the different races (human, elf, dwarf, kossith, etc) but xenophobia and ethnocentrism definitely play a part in DA. Colorism hasn't been explicitly discussed due to the fantasy racism thing but I have no doubt it exists within the world of Thedas considering we've only seen two black woman in the main cast (Vivienne and Isabela) and two fellows of indeterminate real world racial and ethnic backgrounds (Zevran and Fenris). I am excluding Dorian, Sebastien, and Alistair from this discussion due to the discourse surrounding their non-white vs whiteness. Personally I would include them under the "nonwhite" category (Dorian and Alistair especially) but I aint here for discourse so I can't say one way or another and saying each of them is "just tan" just doesn't cut it in my book so I'd rather not tackle that can of worms. There is also the issue with the whitewashing (and skin color discrepancies) of Fiona, Briala Alistair, and Isabela in the games and comics vs the canon established in the books (and games). Fiona and Briala both have brown skin in the books but are pasty white in Inquisition. Isabela has brown skin in the games and looks pasty in the comics. Alistair has a golden brown undertone to his skin in Origins and DA2 but ends up looking like a ghost in the comics and Inquisition. Those are some pretty huge discrepancies imho with Inquisition's in-game models for Fiona and Briala being the biggest offenders. What is considered in-game canon is constantly being retconned and it drives me up a wall to see fans try to reconcile all of the Dragon Age media to one concise summary because the writers and designers don't follow their own canon. Personally I enjoy Vivienne's character and her storyline. There is a depth in the focus on how she went from a starving commoner to a powerful and influential mage who has plenty of political pull. She's quite complex. Honestly after reading the Grishaverse, I can see Vivienne in Zoya, Alina, Nina, and Genya and their struggles from becoming world renowned Grisha. I wish people could make those connections without having to have Vivienne be the main focus of the story.
@masterfreeman117

@@kraziiXIII Sten not understanding the concept of a female warrior does not really have a direct impact on Vivienne or any other characters that live outside of the Qun. I have only played the games, so I cannot speak for the comics or the novels, but at least from what I have seen, I get the impression that in the fictional world of Thedas, skin color has little to no impact on your life. Your species, your nationality, your wealth and whether you can use magic or not, are probably the greatest factors that will shape a persons life. In Ferelden and Orlais women do currently not appear to be systematically oppressed, at least not anymore than the men. Women have the same rights or lack thereof as men. Women are not prevented from holding any office, having any occupation or serving in the military. Only women may hold high ranking positions in the chantry, which is the dominant religion in Thedas. Only if Leliana becomes the new Divine will men even be allowed to become priests.

This really got me thinking, I never felt one way or another about Vivienne, but after hearing this I like her. I respect her prowess in the art of politics, her grasp of the minds and hearts of the people, her knowledge of the intricacies of the nobility. I kind of look up to Vivienne now. I still think Cassandar or Lelianna are the best choices for the next Divine, but Vivienne seems like an alright candidate to now that i hear all this. I just wish she was a bit more relaxed on the mages. Cullen’s viewpoints on them in this game is one of the reasons I fell so deeply in love with him, it would be nice for Vivienne to share some of those sentiments or at least a bit of leniency. Still very good character who my decision on her has now definitely been swayed.

"She didn't have to live in the Circle and obey templars." Seriously? Did you really play the game? Didn't you know that Vivienne lived in TWO Circles and that most Circles follow meritocracy? Any mage who proves himself/herself trustworthy can live away from the tower. Vivienne is not the only one. "Vivienne: *Most Circles allowed mages to live away from the tower, either on their own or in service to the nobility. All that is required was the permission from the First Enchanter.* " "Vivienne's parents were both merchants from Dairsmuid in Rivain, though she herself was born in Wycome in the Free Marches. *She was taken to the Ostwick Circle at a very young age, where she became one of the youngest full-fledged mages in Circle history. She was transferred to the Montsimmard Circle at the age of nineteen.* She was already an exceptional scholar and showed early promise at the Game. In a shocking move, she elected not to join any Fraternity when she became a fully-fledged enchanter." "Vivienne: *I enjoyed life in the Montsimmard Circle, my dear. It was an edifice devote to knowledge and refinement.* " "Vivienne: Having opinions about templars, my dear, is exactly about having opinions about mages, or Nevarrans or men. I've known some who were impossible to endure and some who were utterly charming. *I've suffered insults at the hands of those in the armor,* but no more than I endured from nobles or tradsmen in Val Royeaux." *Cole describing Vivienne arriving the Circle of magi for the first time as a child:* "A breath-caught smile from the Enchanter as the candle lights. The walls are safe; she will never be hungry again."
