Sofronitsky plays these preludes better than Scriabin himself. It is great that these recordings are now available. Party aparatchiks did not like him and his vinyl in old days was only available if you had friends in the Melodya store in Moscow. They issued them in minuscule batches. I did not have friends in Melodya store (I did not live in CCCP), but I had a friend in Moscow who did have a friend there... Lucky me to be able to listen to Sofronitsky playing Scribin in 1960-ties... Now you can buy this stuff on Amazon and you do not have to listen to scratches on the vinyl records... Oh well, I am old as you guess...

Is it really what you are thinking about when you are listening to Sofronitzky ? What a pity ! Do you really have a feeling of the music played by Sofronitsky ? Sorry, but I do think Sofronitsky was concentrating himself about music, not superficial sovietophobic speech that caracterized Occident today and before. What a pity you are not able to listen to what Sofronitsky says, that is beyond poor words.

Just heard pletnev back to back on the first prelude what a huge improvement when listening to Sofronitsky, they don't even sound like they are playing the same musical instrument.
@ediccartman7252

Can't really agree with you - I think Pletnev's worldview is pretty closed to that of Scriabin (I mean Pletnev of the last 10 years , when in his playing he basically came to the same concept as Scriabin in the end of his life . Total estrangement from the modern world and especially modern сultural scene . RNO, his Kawai which he takes to all his concerts and delta - I guess that's all Pletnev accepts in today's life, so Scriabin-like, isn't it ? If Scriabin was the greatest solipcist of the last century, Pletnev is definitely that of 21st. I think it's not ocassional he started to play so much Scriabin in the last time (Prometeus, Poem of Exstase, his piano concert). And you're right about the gap between Bechstein of 19th century, on which Sofronitsky probably made this record and modern instruments. You feel it especially in Scriabin's music which sounds too ideal and cosy on most of them. I guess that's one the the reasons Pletnev hasn't played solo for so long.

Why does he need to bang out chords in certain Preludes where the technique has high demands - when other pianists play quietly and with respect to the music? I cannot recommend this performance. Several Preludes are very well done, those not relying on too much technique...

Jack sparrow Scriabin died before Sofrotnisky married his daughter. Sofrotnisky never met him. Although I love his Sofrotnisky, I also hate it when people spread misinformation. His boldness and straightforwardness is present in not only Scriabin, but plenty in the music of other composers he performed as well. This has nothing to do with Scriabin's preferences, it's Sofrotnisky's own preference and genius.

This kind of stuff of sound is why classical music is dying out, orchestras going out of business today, cause it twists people's minds, it does not do a thing for most people. It does not uplift them, nor inspire them to unfold their own powers. Not much beauty in this garble de goo. I can hear some desire here and there in it, lost dreams, but mostly bla, bla, bla, perfect background springle to stay bored.

It is sad to think that not many can appreciate his music. Strange to think in his day he was extraordinarily popular....maybe with comments like yours it is evidence we are actually moving backwards and not forwards. I love playing his music and I have learned a lot of his music. It is wonderfully beautiful, passionate, intricate and it inspires me greatly. I would never blatantly smash a composer and his music without having studied it or at least attempted to play his works. Then after that maybe I would make a decision......gracefully.
