HUSTLE - got it. I am starting out and I've been afraid to look for clients because I am afraid I don't know what I am doing. But, that didn't stop you when you were starting out. I make videos just for myself, but this definitely inspires me to get out there and just do it.

Oh and I would like to hear about your experiences with conferences. Are they worth the investment? Which conference have you learned the most from? If I have a limited budget, where is my money best served? Workshops, conferences, books, membership sites, gear, tutorials?

Dude, your story is insanely similar to mine! I was homeschooled, interested in a ton of different subjects, working to graduate early, working on a t3i, etc. That's crazy! Thanks for the super awesome video.

Tim McGovern we should start a club ;) Homeschooled with a t3i seems a pretty steady footings. I've just upgraded to Panasonic g80 and I'm starting to get a few more clients. That's longboard video looked good. I might do something with a brand and send it's to them, thanks for the idea.

Wow this is weird. Same story with being homeschooled and the Canon t3i as my first camera! Now been able to shoot with several different Canon, Blackmagic, and Sony cams...but above all gotten to do some really awesome creative projects with some awesome people. Keep the hustle going Evan and thanks for sharing!

This is great advice Evan! I remember watching those Original Skateboard videos back in the day and ended up buying one. I also remember buying a T1i back then and shooting photos and video with it ha. Very inspiring as I am on the same road grinding and learning as much as I can online while in film school. School teaches you a lot, but learning online is still one of my favorite pass times. Keep it up man, I will be following.

That was really awesome to hear Evan. I first heard you talk in the Modern Cinematographer Podcast, i usually listen to it as I commute to work in the morning and get all dreamy and inspired before i sit in front of my desk lol. But now your story resonates with me a lot, even though i am in another continent with a different culture and a different everything. Thanks for being true and sharing this! Cheers

Amazing story - I can't believe just how similar your story is to mine. I got my t3i almost 5 years ago now, but I ended up not using it for almost 3 years. I've recently started getting back into it and I can't agree with you more - learn every single day and keep practicing and honing those fundamental skills. Subbed!

Hey Evan! First and foremost I must say that even though I really don't know you, I respect and value what you do and who you are. At ten I started volunteering in video at my church and I bounced around photo/video from then on. I have only done one commercial job and my background is just like you: testimonials and events for the church. Along with several years where I did no video at all and learned everything about photography that I could. I currently have a scarlet MX that I was blessed with for a ridiculously good price and I am strongly considering buying the epic-w since I can do the trade in. At the moment my wife and I have a pretty low overhead but this would of course put us in debt for about $10-$15,000 after the dsmc2 accessories I would need to run the camera. With it, I would continue pursuing my dream. Commercial filmmaking and creating short films. I know it's possible, I know I can do it and my wife supports me in it but it's a very scary chance to take. I guess my question isn't really a question but more seeking advice from someone who gets it.

im kinda lost in terms of what to get next, iv saved up 20k so far for a camera and was looking at the new AU-EV1A {panasonic} but was wondering if its better off just getting a gh5 i already have lights slider glide cam tripods exct but only use a D800 which can't even shoot 60fps hd.. and am wondering what you'd recommend in that situation thanks!!

Ditto. This is something that a lot of creative people just don't think about. About Taxes and the 1040 Form. Insurance for your equipment. How to market. I try to preach this to people. You HAVE to learn this stuff. Granted you don't need to be an accountant, but you do need to know enough. This stuff is what makes a professional. This is leverage too. It really is a psych effect to clients when you show that your more than a gorilla with a finger on a shutter.

i've been to different filmmaking workshops, and getting involved in other pros projects... but these projects end up being disappointments, and don't live up to any a satisfactory level. so i started doing odd jobs on freelancer sites until i saved up to buy a s35mm camera, lenses, some audio gear.... now that i have my own setup i can produce the quality shorts i always had in mind. you can do that too....

A t3i for Christmas. Fuck, that'd be nice. By the time I scraped together the cash for mine, I was on Ebay buying plastic bits for a "rig" and a couple 40-year-old lenses for $30. Total. These days I'm glad to be rid of it.

Im on hiatus from the filmschool i was teachingat in burbank, but my students make the 45 min hike over the hill to get the education they think they're missing there. I'm bringing industry professionals to give them the inspiration because I stress the importance of them learning to be job creators instead of always looking for someone else to hire them. My office is in Playa Vista, a stones throw from Loyola Marymount University (Where I went to school)
