hi,
gotta keep the fans up to date with every occurrence in my life!!
but seriously, i haven't been up to much this year aside from regular physio and health appointments, so it was really nice to go for a little trip and explore a new place.
this was the first time travelling by myself as a wheelchair user and i didn't realise how much i missed the feelings of confidence and freedom that can come from traveling alone. it is definitely something i would like to challenge myself to do more of in the future, but this trip was to see Richard and get the flat more sorted.
we made the most of our time in London, visiting the British Library and The Tate Britain.
smiles,
Emelie
Now You See Us: Women Artists in Britain, between 1520-1920, who forged a path for women to come.
getting to see this exhibition was such a fantastic experience. i was continually struck by the quality of the paintings and the fact that i knew the names of male artists during the different periods and in the same genres but i hadn't heard much about these women.
having studied 17th century painting at the Stuart court i thought i would have stumbled across Joan Carlile, but i hadn't. perhaps this is because many of the sitters for her portraits are unknown, but she was one of the first professional women artists in Britain in the 1600s.
i also never realised that Artemisia Gentileschi had travelled to London, it was striking to see a self-portrait of her done here.
Mary Moser was one of only two female founders of the Royal Academy. she received many commissions and her works were popular but few of them were kept in good condition.
Ethel Walker painted both male and female nudes confidently, after many movements and iterations of censorship where women were seen as too delicate to interact with this type of imagery. she became known for her mural-like painting style and received honours.
incredible exhibition!
