Today this wonderful city is the Ukrainian city of Lviv. For a long time up until World War II the city was the Polish city of Lwow, one of the main cultural centers of Poland. Both its Polish historical past and its Ukrainian present should be acknowledged. Nostalgia need not be equated with aggression. Let Poles with roots in Polish Lwow keep the ties alive and let today's Ukrainians enjoy their city of Lviv.

Not all the time Lviv was Polish. Do not forget it was 150 years under Austria and before occupied in 1387 by polish king, city was Kingdom of Galicia-Volhynia. It was also founded by Daniel of Galicia and named by his son Lev. Also physically most significant important buildings such Opera, Hotel George etc, physically were built by ukrainian building and engineering company of Ivan Ivanovich Levynskyi. Company of Levynskyi, was the biggest employer of Lviv and Galicia.

@@kaiznpl I'm talking about all aspects. Why do Russian trolls write that Lviv is a Polish city? If this city was founded by the Ukrainian King Danilo and named it in honor of his son Leo. Lviv was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, part of the Soviet Union. But all the same remained the Ukrainian city . And this is not Polish or Austrian architecture. This is a pan-European architecture with Ukrainian features and colors.
@swietosawagromowadna7957

Danilo was half Polish in ethnic meaning,and he didn't consider themselves Ukrainian. On territory of today's Lviv lived polish Lendians tribe(they had resettlement here) ,but they were resettled and ruthenised (some maybe fled on west to Poland. Not Polish? Lviv was called "second Kraków".

Western Ukrainians have more genetically in common with Belorussians and Southern Poles than they do Russians. Look at the map, do the math. You can't coexist for over 1000 years without some genetic overlap. People have a chip on their shoulder about this subject, don't worry about them.

Where did Danilo find Lviv in the forest? As you claim that this is your culture and architectural style, why Krakow has the same architect. Could it also belong to the mystical Ukrainian nation?

You know the story... Do you ? Lwów (that's the *PROPER* name) used to be a *POLISH* town... What really happened in the recent past, was that - after WWII - the *POLISH* citizens of Lwów were *REPLACED* by Ukrainian citizens and - in turn - those "replaced" Polish citizens were moved to *BRESLAU* to replace the *GERMAN* citizens of this *GERMAN* town that - in the meanwhile - became "polish" and was renamed as "Wrocław"...

In case if ukrainians were threatened well in Rzech Pospolita most likely whole western Ukraine would belong to Poland nowadays.But when you lead that land you didn't provide decent conditions for minorites. Today Ukraine is moving same way when minorites are not equal to ukrainians in rights and it can lead to world consequences unfortunetly. Well, I believe you missed the history class, ukrainians and poles had struggled long time before there USA and I can't say they did a perfect job when trying to solve the disagreements by themselves. As for USA, besides taking the land from the indians it has some merit for having today an independent Ukraine and not being part of USSR or mother Russia, or having an free Poland. I'm also eastern european (Romania), I don't love USA but I'm not so dumb to not admit that we owe America a lot.

Off course in and around Rynok square they do speak it. But i like to explore the city by foot and see where i end up even in small shops and café outside touristic area and there it was hard to find some english speaking people. Althoug even they do not understand you and i do not understand them all worked out fine, ukranians are in general helpfull people and friendly.

***** what is so wrong about russian architecture (i mean the really good buildings from the 16-19th century)? it looks very nice to me, something very different to that boring catholic european style. i am from germany. does every place on earth must have a "european" look? if so, the world would be so sad. its about diversity! and to be honest, i have much more a crush on odessa than lviv. lviv has a western europe style architeture. you can see these in austria, slovakia, poland, czechia etc.. it is getting really boring over time. do you know the national bank of ukraine building in kiev? this is my flavour, this is what i enjoy in eastern slavic countries

cool cat I get what you meant but you chose the worst example possible, it actually counters what you said. The National Bank of Ukraine building is neo-renaisance in style. I don't want to hate Ukrainians because they are probably the most similar people to Poles, alongside Czechs and Slovaks maybe; but truth be told, no matter how similar they are, this city was built by settlers from Krakow and it's annoying to see others try to take credit for it. If you don't believe me go read a history book or Wikipedia and find out for yourself who built this city and if you're too lazy to do that just compare the cities aesthetically and tell me they do not look the same. If you want to be proud of something that is truly Ukrainian go be proud of Kiev tbh, but if you are treating this city as if it's one of your own I find that insulting seeing as it has always been Polish and only became Ukrainian after Nazi Germany invaded Poland and then the USSR took it for itself.

Lviv has a Ukrainian, Polish and German history from what I have read. German was dominant in the Middle Ages, then it was a Polish city with a significant Ukrainian population. Now of course it has a mainly Ukrainian population. There are Polish, Ukrainian and Germanic influences in the architecture. If we are honest, most of the city was mainly designed and constructed during the Polish era. But we should accept it is a unique city with various influences as mentioned, which is currently in the state of Ukraine. Olga, I have to disagree with the logic a little bit, just because Lviv is in the state of Ukraine, does not make it exclusively a Ukrainian city. Do you as a Ukrainian accept that Crimea is Russian? or that Donetsk is not Ukrainian? If Kiev was annexed or invaded by Russia tomorrow, would you accept it as being a Russian city. History plays an important part in determining what a city is. Lviv has had influences mainly from Poland and Ukraine and other countries as mentioned. So I would personally accept Lviv as being Polish as much as it is Ukrainian, because it has been heavily influenced by both people throughout history.

For Land As part of the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland Lviv (Polish: Lwów) became the capital of the Ruthenian Voivodeship founded in 1389. Before that happened, on 17 June 1356 King Casimir III the Great granted it Magdeburg rights. The city's prosperity during the following centuries is owed to the trade privileges granted to it by Casimir, Queen Jadwiga and the subsequent Polish monarchs.Germans, Poles and Czechs formed the largest groups of newcomers. This is on the history of Lviv from Wikipedia.

1. Lviv was founded by Ruthenian (Ukrainian) King Danylo Galytsky in 1256. Lviv was named after Lev І, the eldest son of King Danylo Galytsky. When Lev І inherited power, the city became the new capital of the Kingdom of Ruthenia. The golden lion on a blue background was depicted on the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Ruthenia (or Kingdom of Galicia-Volhynia), from the second half of the 13th century the golden lion on a blue background is part of the coat of arms of the city of Lviv. The Poles have no relation to the founding of the city of Lviv. 2. The oldest churches of the city were built by Ruthenians (present-day Ukrainians). 3. The highest bell tower of the old town was built by Orthodox community of Ukrainian Assumption Church (with the help of the Orthodox Greeks). The Poles are not related to the construction of the highest bell tower of the old town. 4. St George's Cathedral, the city's largest temple, was built by Ukrainian Uniate community. 5. Ukrainian patriot Ivan Levinsky was the largest contractor in Lviv in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It's foolish to compare the history of Lviv and Danzig. More than 90% of Germans (98% of German-speaking) lived in Danzig before the start of WW II, although formally the city was not part of Germany. More than 90% of Poles have never lived in Lviv. At the maximum, only 50,4% of Poles lived in Lviv. BTW, present-day Polish city of Chelm and city of Przemysl can be considered the Ukrainian cities. These cities were part of the Kingdom of Ruthenia. In 1914 in the Chelm Governorate lived 912,000 inhabitants, of which 50,1% Ukrainians and only 30,5% of Poles. Many people forget that in the late Middle Ages Lviv was largely German than the Ukrainian or Polish. In the 15th century, the Lviv Magistrate used the Saxon dialect of German. In 1527 a terrible fire destroyed almost the entire medieval town. I agree that the Poles have made a significant contribution to the development of Lviv but I don't like when the Poles understate the contribution of other nations to the development of the city.

@@zakhust6840 Poland did not take these cities to the Germans. It was given to Poland after the Second World War. Lviv was taken away from Poland. In Lviv there were over 50% of Poles. Sorry but You're imbecile.
