I didn’t initially set out to create such a personal vlog, it just sort of happened, so I’m allowing it, and I’m not censoring or filtering any of it for you.
.
In my reconnecting journey, the injury of identity arises a lot for native kids, mixed natives, adopted natives and so forth.
I’m sure that you’re no Stranger, to the condescension or shame that comes from claiming your heritage if you don’t look exactly like the man in my tutorial. And more so if you’re Cherokee. Oddly, my father looked a lot like this man. Except he wasn’t sure that he was native enough either.
.
Especially in the winter, when I’m much lighter, and I don’t get enough sun, I can be very insecure about my native identity., fear of being shamed. I kept it private most of my life, until one day in my 20s when I went out to the forest and called upon my ancestors for guidance and healing, having had issues with psychedelics and entities.
.
The reality is that native identity is much deeper than what you look like, and our realities, our brains, our minds, our hearts, operate in ways unique to us. If you begin to study your history deeper, you will see that there’s been a long-standing attack on native identity, a strong effort to separate us from our families, and from our ancestors. A strong effort to rewrite who we are, or that we exist at all.
.
It brings tears to my eyes just speaking it out loud to command my voice to text.
.
If you follow your lineage back to your ancestors, it will heal you.
.
And some may say, why care? What relevance does it have to the moment?
.
Well, as they say, the truth will set you free. It’s hard to explain, you’ll have to look for yourself. You’ll have to start your own journey of decolonizing your own mind and heart and spirit. A journey that will connect you to Land.
.
i’m happy to see that the West is receptive to learning about spirituality. And while everyone is trying on different cultures and practices because they don’t have any access to their own anymore one thing that often makes it hard for me to connect with those groups is their lack of awareness, lack of education on racial justice, and that they don’t have a decolonization lens in their healing work .
.
While, spirituality and plant medicines are trending, I think that consciousness shift we all need is decolonization.
