I unfortunately DNFd I want to eat your pancreas - I just wasn't feeling it! I wanted to love it. I'm glad you did! I cry almost every single time I cut onions 😂 I love hearing your thoughts on Welcome to the Hyunam-Dong Bookshop!! WHAT a brand new bookstore? No way! We just got an indie bookstore in our area for the first time in a long time and i am so excited!!

I can get why you wouldn’t enjoy I Want to Eat Your Pancreas. It reminded me of a kdrama for the first chunk of it, which was probably why I enjoyed it so much haha. By the time it gets really sad, I was attached, so it hit me in the feels. I knew you’d enjoy hearing my thoughts on Hyunam-Dong! We had a great chat about it on Christy’s channel with Yoon last night. We have two indie bookshops that opened in our area in the past year! I wish the one that’s closer (the one that just opened) had more of a selection. It was a LOT of cozy mysteries and romances and not a ton in other genres. But they just opened, so I’ll probably stop back in when they’ve been around for a bit 😊

I am hopefully going to read a Manga/Manwa soon. Just waiting on the library loan, per usual. I liked both Korean novels I read this year and the kimchijeon (or buchimgae) were yum 😋

Dalg is Chicken in Korean. Gogi is bbq’d or grilled or “flamed”meat. So dalgogi is grilled chicken Bulgogi is always beef. Mulgogi is fish. Dwajigogi is pork. Though often it’s ribs for traditional bbq and it’s called Kalbi or Galbi.

I didn't realize that! The website that I used called it chicken bulgogi (or dak-bulgogi) and so have the Korean restaurants I've gone to!

The main character's flippant divorce was why I didn't end up picking up the bookstore book. It bothers me so much that in our culture, and apparently Korean culture to some extent, if someone wants to "find themselves" or "have a fresh start," it starts with them getting a divorce 😑 As if you can't be your true self if you're still tied to someone who knew you in your past or something. Although I've also noticed the people in those stories don't have kids, so we seem to recognize you can't just abandon your kids, but your spouse is fine? I started Banned Book Club a couple days ago, but I don't know if I'm going to finish it or not. It would jump scenes really quickly, and there were times when I wasn't sure what was happening because I didn't have enough context or I couldn't tell some of the characters apart.

I totally understand your reticence to pick it up. I didn't think it overwhelmed the book, but it was present. As the character grows and matures, both her and her husband realize that they didn't really try to talk things through and they regret that. I don't know if the divorce culture is as strong in South Korea as it is in America, but that's something that frustrates me too! It doesn't feel like it's much of a commitment when it's talked about so flippantly. Oh, that's a bummer about Banned Book Club! I won't be able to get my hands on it until Tuesday at the earliest, so I don't know how I'll feel about it. Maybe my prior experience with mangas will help me out, but who knows? I don't think I've heard anyone talk about it except Christy.
