I don't think the embellishments are too much. She is not recording the song for a cast album, so I think a performer is justified in taking some liberties to give the piece a personal touch. Since Morissette is admired for her riffs and runs, putting a few in here and there seems appropriate to me. And, given the context of the recording, a lot of pop singers would go much further. You'd have to ask Stephen Schwartz (the composer of Wicked), but I think he'd give it a big thumbs up. I'm not convinced that the issues you identified as vocal fatigue are necessarily that, though they might be. And the slight wobble on the long, soft note may just have been a lack of preparation. Given how strongly she lasts through the demanding end of the number, I'm not sure how much vocal fatigue she was experiencing early on in the song. Morissette often has an audible intake of breath (a consistent minor issue over many years), but it is not as much of an issue for her as it is for some singers. I agree, though, that it would be worth working on with a vocal coach.

from a musical theatre purist this is not "how it is done". One thing I learned in presentations is that you speak/sing to your audience. She does that perfectly. As for Broadway, the production direction would set the rules and #Morissette will deliver, perfectly as always.

Wow! You can analyze. In my opinion she's the greatest in the world! She has fun on stage and when she has nailed something she let's you know in a tasteful way. Go Filippinas! I have a suggestion for you. Analyze 4th Impact's vocals. They're known as the Queen's of Harmony in the Philippines. Choose any of their many live performances. They are a 4 sister multi award winning Girl Group with 2 Sopranos (One a belter, the other a light airy sound) a Mezzo Soprano and a contralto. 20 vocal coaches have been wowed by them. Vocal Lab Collective said "Vocal gymnastics and vocal prowess at it's best" of their cover of Bruno Marr's "Leave the Door Open."

Thanks for your analysis, Dan. It was fair and insightful. As a solid Morissette fan, I didn't mind the suggestions that you have said, after all, they're constructive and you know your area of expertise being a vocal coach. I just like to point out though some things that place Morissette in a different league are her mastery of her story telling technique, her close to flawless diction, her on point song build-up and ability to use emotions properly to connect with her listeners. These of course are additions to her great range and powerful voice. In my opinion, she's a gifted vocalist and performer.

Thank you so much, Dr. Dan, for your thorough review and analysis, and, of course, your appreciation and compliments to Morissette. 🥰 I now only realized, because you mentioned it, that in this session, she is not holding the mic, nor is it placed infront of her mouth as in the Wish Bus, so she had to manage the dynamics of her voice, the lows and highs, the pulls and push, by her own control and adjustment, while at the same time keeping in pace with the sound track. Not only that, she has to maintain her story-telling through her facial expressions, smile, and gestures, while looking directly at her audience (us) through that single camera. The level of professionalism and efficiency Mori shows is absolutely astounding and admirable. 🥰 Those big notes towards the end always get to us, no matter how many times we've watched this performance. And you made us realize that it was really a hard thing to do. That because of the difficulty of the song throughout, at that point the voice has almost reached its breaking point due to fatigue and exhaustion, and yet Mori still belted out those big notes, rich, full, not strained, constricted nor screechy, but breathtaking and awesome, and if that was a live performance on stage with a huge audience, deserved a standing ovation of cheers and applause. 🥰👏👏👏

This is the most spectacular and most exciting performance of that song I have ever heard. And it is done flawlessly by the most perfect vocalist I've known. I enjoyed your analysis of Morissette Amon's vocal performance in Defying Gravity. I agree with your assessment of her technique and breath support, but I don't think the moment you identified as vocal fatigue was actually that. I think it was a stylistic choice on her part to have a whispery or intimate sound in her voice. She often does that with songs she sings. I think it's an interesting interpretation, and it adds to the emotional impact of the song. Thanks for sharing your insights!

Thanks for the great analysis Dr. Dan. What a powerhouse she is. It’s interesting that a singer’s choice to not sing something like whistle tones or complicated melisma can be just as important to the performance as what she does choose to include. I imagine it takes a measure of maturity to resist doing it just because you can. I do enjoy hearing your personal preferences in your analysis. It kind of give us permission to also have preferences. Personally I like the sound she got where you identify vocal fatigue. I’d like to hear her do more of that (by choice not due to fatigue) Love how she spices it up a bit with the grows too. The energy she exudes through voice and gestures and facial expressions is fantastic and contagious. What a wonderful pick me up. I felt I could defy gravity just by experiencing her sing this. Love it 😍

So nice to have someone with knowledge talk about this generational singer. Morissette stated in an interview that she will no longer whistle like she has done in the past. Morissette now uses her whistle as an "accent" in a song. Mariah is a cautionary tale and Morissette is heeding it. May I recommend 'Someone Like You" from Jekyll and Hyde. Not only is it a simple performance but a deeply connected one. The actor in Morissette shines.

I love that you wanted the performance as clean as possible but it won't hurt if Morissette puts a touch of her artistry to make her perfromance her own. And I don't think it was neccessary to put whistle notes on a song that doesn't have whistle notes in the first place and I feel like Morrissette knows it wouldn't make sense, just because she can doesn't mean she has to. 😊 She's Asia's Phoenix. ❤❤❤

you cannot remove the sound of air intake from the performances of Morissette......with the power, speed, length of of the notes she delivers, it is 99% unavoidable in a song......that percentage goes down however if the song is a "slow" "soft" ballad wherein less airflow in the lungs are required....but then, there is also a case she uses long extended breaths for 2 to 3 phrases before air intake.......so if you are going to be "picky" with that, don't attempt to work with Mori,.....things will not go well.

"Many vocal coaches," eh? Exaggerate much? I've watched basically all the reactions to this performance that exist. SOME vocal coaches noted that her use of grit is atypical for broadway and would not fly if she were actually performing in the show on broadway, but I don't recall "many" vocal coaches expressing "issues" with it. I also don't recall "many" coaches complaining about the ornamentation. She actually fills with riffs and runs far less frequently than many of her counterparts. Also, she herself made it abundantly clear during this six-song set that she was trying to fuse her signature sound with the traditional broadway style, not do a 100% authentic broadway rendition.
