Hello from Japan🇯🇵 Her distortion voice is called Kobushi, a kind of expression technique from Japanese traditional music, Enka. It shows strong emotions. She uses this technique in Gurenge possibly because Demon Slayer's story background is Japan a century ago. That possibly makes you like Gurenge more! Anyway, thank you!

I'm not fluent in Japanese, but Japanese vowels are pronounced different to English, so that may be why you where confused. "A" is pronounced "ah" instead of "ay", "E" is more open and "eh" instead of "ee", o is "oh", "I" is pronounced more "ee" and U is more "oo". So her vowels are going to sound like she is using a technique, but it is just the language. If anyone fluent in Japanese find these incorrect please feel free to correct me, i am learning still :)
@whatwhat2152

@Aethid
3 жыл бұрын
All of the vowel sounds in Japanese also exist in English. The mapping from Japanese syllables to the latin alphabet was established by Portuguese missionaries, which is why it does not map directly to how those same letters are pronounced in English. A direct mapping would be impossible anyway, as English likes to overload letters such that each has a multitude of possible sounds (sometimes even overlapping with sounds used for other letters. e.g. "i" and "y" can both be pronounced as the same vowel sound in some contexts) and often entirely arbitrary diphthong combinations (as English has ~2,000 sounds and only 26 letters). English having so many sounds compared to Japanese (with only a couple hundred) is why it is so much easier for a native English speaker to learn approximate Japanese pronunciation than the reverse. There are only a handful of new phonemes to learn for English->Japanese (all new consonants, no new vowels), but many many times that for Japanese->English.

I’d just like to remind y’all that she’s singing in Japanese so don’t get too hung up over her vowels... also it’s an anime opening and there’s likely something dramatic going on onscreen during this so it’s good to sing dramatically n differently than usual singing

@@hananabanana7955 yeah it’s a pretty noticeable difference to me, especially for shows like demon slayer that are super action packed and fast paced... slice of life or comedy anime’s don’t follow that rule as they tend to be slower and upbeat but for shows like demon slayer or jujutsu kaisen sorta ones are almost guaranteed to sound fairly similar and like rock songs

@@kookoo9800 i had heard two of her Risa's songs before knowing who she was. only two. Crossing Field and My Soul, Your Beats (obviously), but the rest of her songs, anime or not, i knew as songs before openings. i was honestly disappointed when i heard Gurenge in Demon Slayer, but it grew on me... then i heard Rising Hope, in that... in that... monstrosity (Irregular at Magic High School). I don't think iv'e heard any other of her songs in Anime. i know she has done quite a few songs for anime, but i probably haven't heard the anime. i think a lot of anime have really 'explosive' openings because it has to grab your attention. when slice of life is the focus, it isn't so serious so it doesn't need to be so forceful in getting your attention. if you wanna watch a slice of life, you don't watch it for the action packed scenes often. that's also why endings are usually so soft, because they have no purpose other than closing the show. a show can't be ruined by an ending song so there is no need to make it so boisterous. i kinda don't like singers doing openings for the reason that, whilst it does show the viewer of their songs, they aren't usually the songs the singer would usually do. take Ling Tosite Sigure. when you hear Unravel or Abnormalize, or any of their anime opening songs, you hear soothing vocals and instruments suddenly transform into a different tone, pace and the whole song feels fractured, but that's what makes it entertaining and makes you like them. however, when you check out their non anime songs, it's completely different. White Silence, in Tokyo Ghoul, is a better representation of the real Ling Tosite Sigure. when you like an opening that a group made, you're not usually listening to what that group normally does, even if the opening style is what they're known for
@Eeeeerisssss
3 жыл бұрын
@@xdrake9348 Well in English vowel usage is more liberal and a lot of words can be pronounced with different vowels and a lot can just use schwa (ə) but Japanese is more strict with pronunciation so you can't change how the vowels sound as much and the vowels she used may or may not have been artistic decisions so you shouldn't really hang on them is what I think op was trying to say maybe

To everyone saying she's singing the vowels the way she is because of the available vowels in Japanese: that's irrelevant to the vocal analysis. the tea is that you can sing vowels with a different mouth shape (tongue position, narrow/closed or wide/open mouth, soft/hard palate, etc.) to produce either a brighter or darker overall sound/resonance and to either propel or close off the overall sound. You can sing "a, i, u, e, and o" with a bright texture or a dark texture. It's all the same regardless what language the vocals are being analyzed in. Tristan is analyzing correctly. signed, a chronically struggling music major with vocal concentration of 5 years LMAO If you read this, thanks for letting me be a nerd

also, the breadth of vowel sounds in japanese is less than in english - american english has 11 or 12 (according to american phonomenology) (god i hope i spelled that right sorry to my linguistics prof), whereas japan has only one way to pronounce each vowel, for a total of 5 sounds. obviously there are "vowel slurs" (ai) which produce a different sound, but those also exist in english (ay, oy).

Every anime opening I have heard from LiSA does so. Not only her voice, but also the lyrics. About the precision of her singing the vowels: I think part of that has to do with the japanese language: It's very important to pronounce those vowels correctly otherwise the meaning of a word can change drasticly
@kaede.3572
3 жыл бұрын
It’s exactly this. I’ve been trained western classical my whole life and the techniques are quite different with vowels. So when I sang a Japanese piece for a jury one time because I wanted to sing something more from my culture, I got points off because I didn’t shape the vowels right. I got the points back once I had elaborated to the judges that it was done on purpose because of the language tho lol

Imo, anyone who has sung Japanese anime songs will know how hard it is to pronounce the words without opening your mouth more than you usually do. Unlike Korean and Chinese languages that have more flatter vowels, Japanese's lean towards hard and open.

most cases that is definitely true but there are some exceptions to that
@jonathanfewer5616
3 жыл бұрын
That's true for some of the stuff he says, but also there is definitely some shifting vowels in places. Like when he talks about that really high "aaaaa" near the end. In the lyrics, the syllable she's singing there is actually "yo", same as the previous choruses, but she pronounces it a bit more like "ya" to get that really intense texture. I'm assuming a fluent Japanese speaker would still recognize it as "yo" though, given the context and the sort of "in between" vowel sound. And btw just cause I've seen a few people in the comments saying this, that's not a criticism, it's a compliment! It takes a lot of practice to have that kind of control over your voice and to be able to alter your pronunciation just the right way to get the texture you want without obscuring the actual lyrics. She's clearly put a lot of work into learning how to do that and she's really good at it!
@lexiepeltola9435

Guys. He’s not talking about the lyrics. An example here would be like “kanashimiyo” at 13:37 She sang the end one closer to an A in terms of mouth shape. You should have heard it as “kanashimiya” instead. It sounds closer to a “yeahhh” than a “yoooo” I’m disturbed how so many of you think it’s purely because of the vowels in japanese. It’s not. LiSA is consciously changing her mouth shape for both pitch and volume.

A lot of the criticisms are unfair since she’s singing in Japanese.
@sophier5030
3 жыл бұрын
Yeah and like, to an untrained (to the language) ear, for example the part where he says, 'that used to be "oh" but now it's "ah"', it is still 'oh', he's just not hearing it that way because he doesn't understand the language so he automatically hears it as what it first sort of comes across to his ear I guess. And I think even if he paid more attention perhaps to the end of the word/sound he would have heard the reinforcement of the 'oh' sound. At least that's what I think, because I still heard the sound she was meant to make. But in the end I think his compliments outweighed the criticism he might have given her and that makes me happy because I love her.
@quipgaming1790
3 жыл бұрын
I don't think he was criticizing her in a lot of the things you are talking about. They were compliments that if you don't have a lot of signing knowledge can sound critical. Also with the oh to ah thing he was saying it was more of an ah sound not that it was an ah. He was saying that was a good thing to modify those vowels not that it was bad.
@terib18_
3 жыл бұрын
i was gonna say the same thing- singing in Japanese is different then singing in English (duh), I feel like this should’ve been left for someone that speaks Japanese or who is familiar with the language rather then someone who knows nothing about it.
@camillepandela2574
3 жыл бұрын
Mmmm..I didn’t see any negative criticisms in the comments, but if you’re referring to the comments Tristan is saying, he’s literally just analyzing what, how and why she might be singing that way. I sing in Japanese and English and it’s pretty difficult to make that mental switch right away (e.g singing English phrases with a Japanese accent). Tristan is really good at keeping objective with analyzing singers (his confused or concerned face, I learned, is just him trying to figure out what to say 😂😂)
@caioellery9117

if you are talking about the way he talked about the vowels, it was not criticism, he was actually praising her for moduling the vowels in a way that is clear what the vowel is while producing the sound that she wanted.
