Dropping octaves is actually one of the easier intervals, especially when you practice part singing a lot. You learn to audiate the difference between octaves very naturally. Harder intervals would be 7ths or 6ths.

As someone with ADHD and Asperger's, emotional logic is a concept, I can't completely grasp. The reason I watch you and no other, is because you explain why they made, the choices they have made logically. You use the logic of the English sentence structure and linguistics to explain why certain notes hit a consonant or vowel and I can follow that. I am in tears every video you post because with your explanations, I can grasp emotional connotation. Thank you so much, for your patience and technically impartial critiques. Thank you again, because of you, I understand musicality logically.

@@severusreynolds5247 No actually, Scott cannot sing deeper than Matt, otherwise Scott would be the "new" bass man in Pentatonix😂. So does for Mitch, he cannot "sing" higher than Bb5. From that aspect, Scott do have the widest range in PTX, at least that's what himself, Mitch and Avi said in some interviews years ago. I believe from their understanding, vocal range = the notes you can apply into singing. If let the vocal range = any pitch you can hit, then I don't think thier vocal range will be so impressive for so many people. Because many people can shout or squeak a really high pitch sound, or bubble a quite low note. But when it comes to singing, everyone knows that there is no way somebody can sing so beautifully at that high as Mitch or at that low as Avi.

Yes, both are great while being so different versions. Or maybe that's why they are both so great. Disturbed's version is quite dark, anxious even and this builds up to a sort of "gospel choir uplifting praise" style. I guess thr reason why both versions work is that they have the passion and emotion in it. The lyrics include emotions in them and after hearing Disturbed covering this I realised that S&G originally didn't get everything out from this. But of course we have to remember that time wouldn't have been ready for Disturbed's style version. And I'd think that this choir type thing wouldn't have gotten much attention either.

One of the things that makes Pentatonix so special to me is their diction and annunciations are so clear and crisp (you can understand the words to everything they sing) as a side note there's the backstory to the song (yes I'm that old that I remember when it first came out. anyway here ya go What is the story behind the sound of silence? 'The Sound of Silence' by Simon and Garfunkel is a song written in the 1960's about the extent to which people suppressed their true views about the Vietnam War. The poetic voice is the poet himself and it is through his vision that we are made aware of the great disappointment that he feels at the peoples inability to say what is on their minds.

Their video is basically what the last few minutes of earth would look and sound like before the apocalypse hit. It's like they are so into it that they are like singing for their lives. Like someone has a gun to their heads. Just so much passion. I always say if you are gonna sing, sing with your whole being or not at all because I don't want to hear a flat performance of a powerful song. I want to feel the song not hear it. I felt this song. I felt it a lot to the point that it nearly gave me an existential crisis. Love your reactions to them as well Tara. Love your analysis and how you break down the technical side of it all. Kirsten is the most underrated member, her high register cuts through the harmony and anchors the high range with a pure, bright female tone. Mitch's counter tenor is amazing too but he's on the falsetto side whereas Kirsten is a bit more natural and pure. Mitch can shine in certain ranges where a high, almost electronic sound is required like Blinding lights and Daft Punk but Kirsten is so rich and solid with her forward voice. Scott is the next underrated, his tone and expression is so rich and smooth, he switches from a softer raspy subdued tone to a rich forward placement effortlessly as well as filling in as bass when Matt or Avi is singing.

You are so very correct. Their arrangements are S.I.C.K. Then add in the talent and hard work every one of them brings to the group, and it's no wonder that when they do a song, 99% of the time, it's incredible. They have an amazing ability to wring out the emotion from every song they do: Joyous, sad, dance beat, whatever. You. Will. Feel. It. I will say though that out of the original and remakes of this song, I like Disturb's the most, but this version is still (as you show us) a master-class of how to sing right.

I educated him on the error of his ways... he doesn't even know what he's talking about. YOU, however DO know what you're talking about, and you said Matt fits in well in the group! thank you for a lovely breakdown of the techniques and choices they made!

I hear something new every time I listen to this song. Today, it’s the backup (Kirsten, I think) who emphasizes the word “light” immediately after Mitch says “flash of the neon light” Sounds like, “flash of the neon light-liGHT” that split the night. So beautiful.

This reminds me of the PTX / Dolly Parton collaboration on Jolene. I've loved Pentatonix since their early KZitem days. They're amazing. When I watched Jolene and heard how much Parton brought to the song over and above them... I never really appreciated Dolly Parton (a legend most popular before my time) until seeing that contrast.

Please please please react to their cover of Gold. It's incredible. You should react to more of their older ones - their more "popular" ones.

I've seen them live twice, once when they first started touring and again last year. I highly recommend it. They are every bit as good live as they are in canned videos.

I love love LOVE your videos on Pentatonix's music! You give such an interesting and in depth reaction! I also love that you give criticism as well because praise is nice, but I personally, like seeing your criticism because not only does it give a new fresh perspective, it's also informative! Which I love cause I'm trying to better my singing voice! So thanks so much for doing these videos, Tara! Much appreciated! :)

"Yes unison!" It also helps that the main 3 vocalists have known each other since they were kids, so having that connectivity to each other's voices helps with unison. Matt is a wonderful addition to the group as much as we miss Avi! Loved it and your video!

I love your commentary and find your analysis highly educational...esp as a non-musician/singer who is deaf in one ear. I appreciate you pointing out what I should listen for so I can "hear" and appreciate their creative genius + technically how they literally create "music for my ears". Cheers!

omg I'm so happy that you did a cover of Pentatonix's version!!! I actually JUST last night suggested it on your reaction to the Disturbed version and seeing it up today was like "omg this is meta" THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU When I watched it the first time I was just like your reaction right at the start. I never knew Scott to go down to the basement like that! He's usually a lighter singer, but it's so cool to hear his voice that low. I love Disturbed's version and I was excited to see Pentatonix covering it. As someone else in the comments said, Disturbed's version is sounding more ominous, where Pentatonix makes it sound defiant and even hopeful. You know how people say music can affect someone's mental state? I think that if someone who was in depression or pretty down low, if they heard this it may help bring them up gently, hearing this version may make them think, "hey I'm gonna follow this, bust through this crap" and start to be more proactive for themselves.

I truly don’t think that anyone in PTX is under appreciated anymore and I don’t think Scott ever was. From the Sing Off, he was put forward as the spokesperson and did the majority of the lead songs, but from a Pentaholic perspective, I have witnessed when we all started to appreciate each of them individually. We were wowed by Mitch’ Voice first. Then Avi. Always Scott then, one day we started to pay attention to what Kevin was doing and were So Amazed! Finally, people who formerly stated that Kirstin was the weakest link, woke up and saw the amount of work she was doing to make the harmony sound flawless, and her solo projects boosted her confidence, then began to see/hear how amazing her voice is too AND appreciate her range, no one on this group is under appreciated, because they are all SO FABULOUS! Now Matt is here. We have already had glimpses of his range, the soulful rich melody of his voice and of course his Bass notes. There is so much more to look forward to with him, but they’re ALL fully appreciated for what they do and how they do it! I love that they all get a chance to vocally shine in songs! That’s what makes them so good. They work together really well and that shows too! Pentatonix is an amazing group that no one is underestimating or under appreciating! (Sermon over). 😉🤗
