Just was at a live concert yesterday, and they EXACTLY sound like this, no microphone, no messing around, it’s MINDBLOWING 🤯

This was recorded on February 21, 2020, on the spur of the moment after seeing the room for the first time. I was at the concert later that day, though while they did not do the Tchesnokoff, it was a very spiritual experience. I've seen Voces8 in concert several times, and it's always magical. They will be back in St Louis for another concert this October 20, 2024, it'll be worth being there. I would not be surprised if they program this for the evening's concert.

Voces8 Is one of the premier choirs in the world. Their leader comes from another group called "The King's Singers" - yet another premier vocal chamber group. Their blend, tone and technique is the best you'll hear. Furthermore, Russian/Eastern Orthodox liturgical songs in this style pierce the soul. Nothing beats the booming basses (Bassi Profundi); some of the lowest and most resonant notes you'll here in the world Look up Ковчег (Kovcheg) chamber group - even just one of their basses can fill a church.

seldom do things have more beauty than those made for the worship of the most beautiful thing in this universe, the worship of the one God, our Lord Jesus Christ, the creator of all things and source of all love in the universe for what else could be a great subject than love itself. Nothing makes me weep like worshipful music it has a power of its own truly.

I love how in sync VOCES8 are with each other, especially their entrances and releases. I don't hear 3 different 's' or 'c' noises when they come in. They're definitely the best choral group I've found so far. If anyone is familiar with groups that meet or exceed this level of skill, let me know.

Nice! If you like such kind of music, I can recommend watching the bass-y version of "Chesnokov - Salvation is Created" by Bass2Yang.

The composer, Chesnokov, never got to hear this performed. He was the last choirmaster of Chris the Savior Cathedral in Moscow. The communists blew up the church. He was so disturbed by the communist suppression of Christianity that he stopped writing music.

AH! To sing acapella in a pitch perfect cathedral! You don't need a mic when the venue is deliberately constructed to carry sound.

There is an entire history behind this song. It was written by Pavel Chesnokov shortly before the Communist Revolution in Russia. After the revolution, the Communist Government banned the production of sacred music and forced composers like Pavel Chesnokov to compose only secular music. In 1931, the communists would dynamite the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, whose last choirmaster was Chesnokov, an event that so traumatized him that he stopped writing music. In 1944, Pavel Chesnokov would die of starvation, while standing in a bread line, 30 years denied the Eucharist, and having never heard his own hymn sung. This gives a great deal of meaning to the sadness in this song, which is even more sad considering that the song was meant to be sung by the people on the way to Communion where they would celebrate receiving the Body and Blood of Christ.
