The difference in sounds you're describing with how low and round her sound is, is because she's using false cord growling. It's very different than fry screaming. Both are super common techniques in heavy music. With fry you have to essentially push the air through the vocal folds while they're clamped shut, resulting in a more strained sound. With false cord you are keeping your vocal cords completely open so they don't touch at all. That's why false cord (what she is using here) sounds so round and full and un-feminine, even when high pitched, because it's got very little vocal noise unless it's a conscious decision to use your vocal cords underneath. That's why it's also super easy to switch back and forth between false cord and singing because the vocal cords don't get tired. Just some harsh vocal theory for you in case you're interested :)
@ryanexsus
4 жыл бұрын
I was gonna add to that, because false chords do not produce a "pitch" rather, the change in mouth shape is what determines whether it sounds like a low death growl or high screams.
@ViktoriaVision
4 жыл бұрын
ryanexsus Yes, I just meant “high pitched” as in higher sounding to the ear. They’re not technically pitched because there’s no vocal noise. But being a harsh vocalist, I can say that it’s a little more than just mouth shape. It’s also based on throat elongation and creation of space at the back of the throat. But yeah mouth shape definitely helps more easily funnel the air to sound higher or lower.

@@spiritlevelstudios TBF, most vocal coaches don't study, or understand much about growls, whether its highs, lows, screams etc. Especially because it is a dangerous technique to learn, when you're not exactly sure on the correct way to do it. Fun reaction - subbed. The live recording session was actually for their new (in 2017) drummer, most of the vocals are off the album version of the song. That said, I've seen them twice in concert and they are at least as good on stage if not better. It seems like they give 100% in the studio, but 110% on stage for the fans. I'd recommend Judgement & Punishment one-take vocal performance which seems totally raw with even a minor error left in. Perennial live at the Wacken open air festival is also an epic performance but with a bit of post-production tweaking to add some subtle vocal layers that aren't in the bootlegs of the show. Tatiana always loved singing and says she sings almost constantly. She had a few months of lessons in school, but never had the discipline or drive to do anything with her talent until she was 15 and someone introduced her to the music of Otep. She was shocked to learn Otep Shamaya is a woman, and had an intuition that she could shock people like that. She started singing cleans in various bands to build her clean singing foundation when she was 15. Then she started practicing growls at 18, while continuing to do clean singing in a number of bands for another 4 years (Jinjer is her 8th band), before starting to perform with growls in the band she joined shortly before being recruited to join Jinjer. This is just a bit lower than her most comfortable growling range, and she can go significantly lower than this. I'd suggest checking out Pit Of Consciousness live in Kiev at some point to see how low she can go. Kudos for pointing out the skills of the rest of the band. They are all superb musicians. Only Vlad has formal training in music, and he has played a big role in their composition process on the Micro EP and Macro album that they came out with after he joined. Eugene is one of the best bass players in metal, and is also their manager, as well as being a competitive amateur Jujuitsu practitioner who took silver in the Abu Dhabi qualifying tournament in Kiev last year. Roman on guitars is the least flashy, but he is a seemingly endless fount of diverse riffs that are a key aspect of Jinjer's sound. Cheers!

Metal vocalist here, came to the comments to talk about false chord growling but got beat to the punch by ViktoriaVision lol. There is a bit more to false chord growling as far as technique goes, good breath support is very important as is placement in order to do it without hurting yourself; I did see that you caught that she's lowering her larynx as part of this. Been enjoying the reactions man, if you'd like a good example of a male vocalist doing both singing and growling of this type, I'd like to suggest the band Opeth - Harlequin Forest Live at the Royal Albert Hall
@somedigitalist7681

Great reaction. The reason that Tatiana's growls/screams don't have a pitch is because they are voiceless screams. That's also why they don't damage her voice at all. At the low end she's using false cord screams which are done with the vocal folds open and utilize the false vocal folds. Because the vocal folds remain open, false cord screaming usually has a very dark timbre and low sound. Higher up, she uses fry screams which are done with the vocal cords held together under significant compression (but not producing tones) such a that only a narrow stream of air passes through them and up to the false folds and the soft palate, rattling them to produce the sound. Fry screams can be identified by presence of harmonic overtones and a much brighter sound. Floor Jansen of Nightwish can false cord scream as well (Nightwish - Yours is an Empty Hope live Wembley for an exampe) and Devin Townsend is a great and well known fry screamer (Devin Townsend - Kingdom for EMGtv is a good intro to him).

Gotta love the algorithm. After a year of searching on Jinjer reactions daily, I'm still getting ones that are years old. This is a really good one. I love it when knowledgeable musicians have their minds blown by Tatiana and the gang! And you're catching the groove. It's awesome how throughout all those time changes, it grooves hard. The meter changes aren't done for the sake of being weird, like in math rock. They serve the song and augment the expression. It took me a while to figure out that chorus. For a while I thought of it as one long measure of 20. Then I realized 20 is divisible by 4. And sure as hell, it's in 4. It's the craziest 4 I've ever heard. But it's in 4. Rock on, Jinjer Army!

And,no...Tatiana NEVER (Im not kidding this time...) had, even a 1/2 hour of training...Ever. And thats more than just crazy... I watched her saying this herself in a interview ,so if shes not lying... There you go... People like her,I know cause I had a similar "situations" in my life as well,so only deeply wounded and the strongest of the strong people, basically bad ass fighters,like Tatiana, those people can do what shes doing. No amount of money can buy such extreme experiences like what Tatiana(and myself) have endured and finally survived certain death situations ,several times,in my case it was 5 full years of the bloodiest war after WW II in Europe... And that is WHY she is now really, really special woman and great singer like no no other. Thats what war does to a human being.Pain is real and we are deeply wounded people with many unseen wounds(those are the worst..),in a beautiful body,with a broken soul and things I cant even talk about,no matter how much time has passed since... No pain...Thats a true statement,thats for sure. But,you and 99% of "normal" people living your lives,have no idea what else happened to Tatiana and millions of us that were used in some deeply messed up experiments and much worse that is so disturbing and stilla big secret to,like I already said,to 99% of humanity(like yourself..) that dont know about "these" stuff. Even if i told you,you wouldent believe me..Its THAT "bat shit" crazy and Im writing this,so you and hopefully others like you,start asking Questions and start learning the Real Truth,not this fake /tv reality where they are controlling us like sheep,and still 99% have NO freaking idea that they(you included...) are nothing but ...What? Slaves... In invisible self implemented mind cages...In other words,humanity is in invisible prison,that has no bars and thats why,no one knows that majority of humanity is actually in invisible prison ,complying to laws that are self destructing and without inhibitions. .. Matrix is NOT a "movie"..Its a documentary. i know you are still in prison..How so?! Cause I earned my freedom,same as Tatiana and I payed and Im still paying for, knowing the TRUTH. Now Im telling you,to: Wake the Fuck UP! Untill you (too) free yourself,or we do it for you (and others as well),we will NOT be truly FREE,ass: One, Humanity... We are waiting for you ,to wake up and you have no idea about what FREEDOM really means and feels like...Even though,you at this moment,are still denying reality of this statement of mine...And Im telling you (this as well): It is not you, that is in prison, it is your EGO thats denying reality without it... Get it? If not,tell me this...What have you witnessed ,by seeing Tatiana here? Start thinking. What is Tatiana trying to tell you/say? Is there a "hidden" message somewhere in this video/song? What is it,if yes? Research what multiple personality actually means and find out,how is this possible,what Tatiana is doing?(In an instant she changes from this to that and what kind of people are capable of doing that? And with what were they(me too) broken,so now we can do things like what you witnessed here with Tatiana? Would you ever even start wondering,how ,why and who did this to us? Tatiana is actually a message ,for all of you so start deciphering it...Get it now? No body bothered to write me (or Tati) a message like this,like im doing now, for YOU... 10Q

Yay, jump on the Jinjer train! Their most recent video for Judgement & Punishment (one-take) would be a good one to react to, as it focuses on Tati’s vocals and you can see/hear pretty clearly what’s going on. Other fun songs of theirs include; Perennial (Live at Wacken) Who Is Gonna Be The One (Live) Teacher Teacher (official) On The Top (official) 👌🏻

FINALLY! The video I was looking for. Yeah, the vocals are bonkers, but I wanted to know what was going on with the meter - and look who picked up on THAT aspect of the song! Not the drummer guy I listed to, but John Henny, Vocal Coach. One of my favorite videos on youtube is your first time listening to Jacob Collier, and I love it because you reminded me what music appreciation is all about. And look who's doing it on this recording!

Since you mentioned you appreciate subtle uses of odd meters, you might appreciate Level Up by Vienna Teng: kzitem.info/news/bejne/tmqkxWyIbp58oaw

Great and beauuuuutiful reaction. Very in depth study and explanation. Tatiana is a phenomenal singer and performer, lots of passion. You really really need to listen to Melody Cristea of Liliac (Lil-EEE-ack). Start with the video called Nothing (original song). Looking forward to more reactions.

Got a new sub here. I'd like to put in a request for two song please, from opposite ends of the spectrum! Unleash the Archers - Awakening (Live band playthrough) and the Diva Dance by Jane Zhang, a song originally 'un-singable' for the movie The Fifth element.

You´ve loved this girl called Tatiana... you´ve loved Floor Jansen haha. Mr. John, you definitely should react to ''Yours is an empty hope (Live in Wembley)'' song from Nightwish 'cause Floor can do growls too. Yeah, Floor doesn't have this intensity and power in her growling like Tatiana but she did an excellent act with this singing technique.

Yes, they like to play with time signatures. The best example would be their song "I Speak Astronomy" - please check that one; "Pisces" is just kind of gateway drug ;-)
