They sometimes have very loud backup vocals (which is a shame because they don't always need it), their snl performance is one of their TV performances with the lightest backup vocals. Also at 5:16, I didn't need to "hear" the backup vocals, I could just watch Jin and see that he wasn't singing the first part of that line (also it's pretty obvious that if he were singing that line, his voice would overshadow the backup vocals because they were comparatively low in the mix). Once you know their voices and the studio songs it's also pretty easy to distinguish what is a live vocal and what is pre-recorded. As for "are they singers" I would say yes they are, but them being singers is equally divided between them being dancers and performers, so they might not be as technically dialed in as some dedicated vocalists are. What they do have is a ton of experience singing through heavy choreography which makes that part of their performances far better than what 99% of dedicated vocalists could achieve in the same circumstances.

So it happens multiple times that the first few words aren't sung live here, the boys don't hide it as the clearly show it. Yes they have amazing live vocals (just search for any of the vocal lines live performances) but all of their performances on their tours are about the full package. Every thing means something, the choreography, the clothing, the make-up, the lyrics, the melody, the instruments. It's all part of it and it's all important they deliver a full story with each song. On tour they perform 20+ songs, all live. To me this was fine they deserve it. There are so many American artist that just stand there and still don't sing live. I think that you should use the term "back track" rather than "backing vocals" because "backing vocals" implies that they need help with their vocals (which they don't). many of the things you mentioned, like RM when you said "I can hear it right now", were adlibs and they never sing them live, EVER. they also never try to convince people that they are singing, they put their mics down, not moving their mouths at all. you can definitely tell that they have very strong voices and don't need any type of support in that area. also, the back track is played low and quietly on purpose so it is very obvious when it's them and when it's not.

I will say this, in order to provide information; BTS, as artist, are most famously known for the following things: 1) for being amazing lyricists (BTS rappers have the most credits on their lyrics, although their music is co-produced and co-written as a result of a collaboartive creative process); 2) for having some of the most difficult choreographies (some are hype, some are delicate, lots of attention to detail, require lots of stamina); 3) for being amazing performers and storytellers (they have incredible stage presence, they know how to interact with an audience, their stages always tell a story); 4) for having some of the best rappers in their inidustry (they were originally a hip-hop idol group); 5) for their teamwork (you notice their transitions, in music or dancing, are seemless). These are the things they are most known for as artists, in short: lyricism, dance, performance, stage presence, storytelling, teamwork, and rap. They are also known for their work ethic, their personalities, their strong bond with their fans, for their vulnerability, for being very humble/kind/honest people and for some of the recurrent messages in their songs (songs about hope, mental health, self-love, self-acceptance, identity, etc). P.D: People often ask us, BTS fans, if we know what are they are saying... Just in case, I will state here that yes, yes, we do. BTS fans translate their content to multiple languages, we research sociocultureal and historical references, we discuss their music. Arguably, their lyrics are what we care about the most. There's a lot more to be said about this group, they are very multilayered and do a lot of different works, but I'm only mentioning what I think you would be interested in and what provides basic context. Thank you for the reaction. I appologise if I was all over the place.

The big problem I see here is saying at the end that "maybe" BTS aren't great singers and more in the vein (ed: spelling) of "performers" like Britney Spears. Besides being demonstrably false, this video is supposed to be analyzing how they sound here, but to throw in conjecture about how they might be as singers overall when you are not familiar with them beyond this performance is going too far. Britney, who is well-known to be a weak singer live, should never be invoked in the same sentence as BTS in terms of singing.

I can totally see where you're coming from and I appriciate your comment. It is true I am a vocal coach, but also a vocal performance coach. I teach how to perform and not just sing, so I do have some grounds for saying what I did. But taking my first experience of them is from THIS video, you could see how I could come about my comment. I realise now, after watching UntoldTruth, that they are stronger singers than I had thought, but the whole purpose of this video was to have a "reaction" to the video. I purposely didn't want to watch other videos first because I wanted to have a raw and true experience and review. It HAD to start somewhere from some video. That was this video. Clearly the more I watch of them, the more my reaction and reviews will change....but i had to start somewhere right? :)
@darchon5
4 жыл бұрын
@@SongsFromASuitcase Thanks for the reply, and apologies for the long post but I want to make sure I'm being clear. To start, as I said you were analyzing how they sound in this particular video based on your expertise, so of course you have the grounds for criticizing what they did in this one. Absolutely they were off key in parts, no problem pointing that out and you should. And yes, obviously as you watch and learn more about them, your speculations about who they are as singers will become more accurate. However, you say "the whole purpose of this video was to have a "reaction" to the video", but you did not do only that - and it's certainly fine to speculate, but in doing so by definition it's going beyond just a "reaction" to what you've watched. And as such, speculating also means that you are no longer dealing with just the facts, so by making statements that extrapolate how they are as singers based solely on one video, especially when the speculation about their singing ability is quite negative and far from the truth, you open yourself up to legit criticisms: - The speculations themselves were incorrect. As you'll come to find out if you're interested, BTS has very good singers - the 4 that are not the rappers; and 1-2 are arguably among the stronger singers in kpop (not just my opinion). Of course you weren't expected to know that based on this video, just noting how this makes your wording about your speculations that much more glaring... - You sounded like you were pretty much on one side of things in saying things like: "they are clearly a dancing group", followed by saying you can't tell if they have much singing skill based on this performance, followed by "Are they singers? But maybe they're not, maybe they're more performers", and finally the Britney comparison of being a performer but not a very good singer. You do realize that it's rather polarizing to say they're "maybe" not singers (you didn't say maybe not the best or great singers, just singers at all), and said another way, you're implying that perhaps they can't sing based on only this 4 minute performance. - About this video and the song itself: it could be the worst they've ever sounded live. Their other SNL song also had a couple of pitch problems, and it was said that some group members were struggling with the monitors and being able to hear (feel free to compare how they sound here with any other live performance they've ever done of those two songs). Certainly you aren't expected to know any of that either, however you did notice another point about the tough choreo and remarked how it could affect their vocals. Also, I get that you probably didn't realize Mic Drop was going to be predominantly rap, and you even said after that you want to hear songs with more vocals - so I would think with that awareness you'd be a little more cautious and hold off on a Britney comparison after one video containing little singing? If you had known more about them at this point or the issues they faced at SNL, I daresay your speculation would have been quite different. And this is where the frustration comes in for some people: reactors who don't know better at the time making incorrect, blanket statements characterizing the group as a whole based on a tiny sample size. An analogy would be like saying maybe Ariana isn't a good singer after watching only one song where she happened to go flat a couple of times. I assume you realize that even she and other greats have done so (and if not, then look up "vocal fails" and you'll see a bunch of videos showing how it can happen to the best of them)? I leave you with a suggestion: if you are still interested in viewing a stripped down showcase of their vocals, albeit brief, try their Carpool Karaoke session with James Corden. Thanks for reading.

To judge for yourself how great singers they are, please react to "bts highnotes and falsettos", it's a video here on youtube. Tbh, they are trained professional singers, so there's no doubt as to whether they can sing. On top of that, in kpop, when they are trained they are also taught how to more or less sing stably while dancing. Anywho, kpop isn't only vocal based, rather dance is very important too, so they normally have backtracks for the kpop idol (aka artists), but they make it louder where the idol would not be able to hit the note due to him/her being out of breath because of the intensity of the choreo, that's what you witnessed on that part you called out of Jin not singing his part. He did it twice so you can tell it wasn't a mistake, rather he must have been out of breath, so purposely decided not to sing on that part. When the choreo is easier or there is no choreo, then all kpop idols slay with their amazing vocals, but when there is tough choreo some are not that stable, like V and Jin, while some fall flat sometimes like Jimin, and some are just gods so they can sing amazingly while dancing tough ass choreos like Jungkook. (I basically named all the singers in BTS, you're welcome).

I watched your other BTS reaction, thanks for reacting to the truth untold! In that video, you mentioned that the one who hit that high note towards the end sounded a little off, I would like to say why: BTS were on tour at the time so obviously they were singing a lot, and I'm not a musician so I don't know the terms to explain it but I do know that that has a bad effect on the singer, so they should rest, but because BTS's schedules were full they couldn't. Now the other members don't get worn out easily, but Jimin (The one who kinda messed up hitting that high note) easily gets worn out and his voice gets messed up to say the least. But aside from that, that note isn't in the studio and album version, he just does it when gets energized by the audience like in that video, but he couldn't hit it well enough there. Also the backtrack thing: whoever says BTS doesn't use backtracks are retarded tbh. They do, sometimes a little, sometimes a lot, but yes, sometimes they don't use it. I explained it in my previous comment where and why they use the backtracks in songs with choreography, as for why and where they use the backtracks in songs without choreo like the truth untold: well, you noticed yourself that they didn't use it until the bridge/last chorus, now over there they used it for the echo effect, cuz in the original studio version the echo effect makes it sound amazing. Once again I'm not familiar with terms so by echo effect I actually mean like the quire sound, where there are multiple people singing the same thing at the same time. Anywho, because the other member's tones are very different from Jin's (The one who sang the final part with the back track), they couldn't have them do it, also they needed them for the adlibs that are supposed to be done in the final chorus while Jin sings, so yeah, they needed a backtrack for that. But yeah, normally there are always backtracks, but with BTS, you can actually hear that they are barely used and if they are they are very subtle or for stylistic reasons or because of choreo as I explained in my original comment.

It totally ok and even better in my opinion for a singer to be slightly off sometimes. It helps me know that there's not a ton of autotune being used. Also sometimes, especially in a song about dram or heartbeak, theres an added emotion that goes into the song when they sing it slightly off. ALmost like they're feeling the emotion of being broken. I personally like it, BUT this video was about reviewing, reacting and breaking down what they're doing so I always have to point out when somthing isn't "perfect". Though I have a feeling some people take that a little too personally. Oh well!

I just want to say that there's no doubt they use backup vocals, they do for most of their performances with a lot of hard dancing. They always sing on top of that, but sometimes their real voices doesn't really shines through as much as you would wish. They use backup vocals to support the parts where they've decided to focus more on the dancing, it's all very thought out. But I don't think they are using auto-tune, they hardly ever do live, there's probably only some kind of vocal effect on their voices to make the sound more "full" as they're dancing!

Glad you brought up the fact that artists can be performers! They are musicians as they do have a hand in writing, composing, and producing their music, but on the stage, they are performers so their audio for certain songs/performances may not be 100% raw on the output :D As many have mentioned, and you acknowledged, yes, they have backing track playing along to their performances, partially because of their heavy choreo, but also partially for the effect (just like how some musicians use autotune when they're very capable of singing well live). Fans who say they don't use it at all are following blindly. Still in the middle of checking out more of your videos!

this is not a vocal focused song. try watching their slower songs i guess. and they ARE great singers and producers and dancers and songwriters. they can be good at all of it, not just dancing. also, it's live singers, not backup track, and on SNL, they added only a lil snippet of backup vocal in between to catch their breath before the next line. they practice singing while dancing, or while running on a treadmill to increase their lungs strength when they are performing, thats why they are so good at singing while dancing. also, for their 2 hours concert, they perform 20 ++ songs while dancing. that shown how much they practice and take care of their health.

I have discovered your channel because of the reaction video you did on BTS, The Truth Untold and i can tell you, your videos are reeaaalllyy honest. Am also a hardcore Army and i do feel hurt when you said that they are flat etc ..but i liked the fact that you actually precise that it is normal as they are dancing. I understand that you may not want to do reactions of BTS again because some of the fandom i will say, is very protective of bts as they do receive a lot of hate because of their popularity but i really want you to do more reactions! It's really fresh to get a non-biased opinion..anyway, continue the good work and stay safe! ❤

hahahaha! I;m actually in the process of creating a How To Sing Like BTS video which will be followed up with video reviews for BTS. I think reviewing How To Sing videos will be my channel direction. Be sure to sub so you dont miss it

The snl performances were not the best they've sung, but the dancing was on point! Not sure if it's because they felt a bit uncomfortable and I think someone said Jin was ill. If you have time, I'd love to see your reaction to Jin singing Epiphany live at final day Seoul (wearing white) thank you x

Hey meh! That's a great suggestion! I'm always happy to review any vocal videos that have enough requests. If I get more requests for this video then I'll be sure to review it for ya :)
