I went up on the cable car. Chamonix lies at 1035 mtrs and summit of the Aiguille is 3842 .Thats a 9000 ft drop with one wrong move. Watched them coming up ridge while on top .Awesome. Climbed all my life but no way this.Just as difficult as the Himalayas . Only difference is the altitude and weather. Chamonix is my favourite place on earth.

Sophie -Grace if this is an honest question, it’s a coiled climbing rope. He may use it as a safety device to rappel off the route if he gets in trouble and needs to go down before completing the climb. One would carry it routinely in the Rockies where one is often in the backcountry and there isn’t a convenient cable car at the top. I love climbing in the Alps where you would rarely die without being in site of at least a Michelin 3 star restaurant.

Superb effort all involved. I can't for the life of me understand why safety rope is not used. I know it slows down the climb and everything takes longer but one mistake and you become a statistic, not a legend. Given all deaths associated with solo climbing, personally, I don't understand the mentality.
@susannewilliams
This is a very calculated risk from extremely competent climbers. Without a rope you can go faster and thus gain a lot of safety. These long routes are hard to do before the sun goes down (or the last cable car goes down) and also as the day wears on it gets warmer and the ice changes and becomes softer and less good for anchoring your axe. If you use the rope and climb one at a time then of course it takes 2x as long. Also on the steep snow there is not much point for a rope because basically there is nothing much to anchor to. Hope this helps. Also this is not actually a very hard route. D/D+ you can see from how the guys move that this is easily within their comfort zone. The rope is also in case of the need to escape downwards.
