Detailed lecture on the Metacarpophalangeal joints of hand complex and volar plates or palmar plates of hand. The metacarpophalangeal joint (MCP) is formed by the articulation of metacarpal heads and the base of proximal phalanx. The MCP joints are condyloid joints and have 2 degrees of freedom namely flexion/extension: abduction/ adduction.
The volar plates are fibrocartilgenous structures which attachment between the base of proximal phalanx to the capsule of MCP joint. The volar plates helps in increasing the congruence of joint, restricts the hyperextension, supports the longitudinal arches of hand etc.
The range of motion of MCP joint: flexion at index finger is 90 whereas then at little finger is 110.
