On the night of November 10, the Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management announced the mandatory evacuation of the town of Grindavík due to a possible magma intrusion beneath the town. Approximately 3,700 residents left the town within two to three hours, with many staying with friends and relatives in other parts of the country, while some finding shelter at emergency aid shelters opened after the evacuation was announced.
The Icelandic Met Office states that the likelihood of an eruption is now significant.
The Reykjavík Grapevine’s Jón Trausti Sigurðarson provides an updates on the situation as of the afternoon of November 11. He speaks with Red Cross Disaster Management Officer Áslaug Yngvadóttir Tulenius, and Grindavík Parish Priest Elínborg Gísladóttir,
The last time a town in Iceland was evacuated due to volcanic activity was in 1973 during the Heimaey eruption in the Westman Islands.
