Some notes I made while watching - not sure if you know some of these things, or if you were made aware of them, but I'm mentioning them just in case: Volcarona learns a move at level 59 because that's the level it evolves at! Giga Drain was changed from a TM to a tutor move in Gen 5 (which was only reverted in Gen 8) - which meant that the initial games in those generations didn't have Pokémon be able to learn the move that way. According to Serebii, only the Elemental Pledges, the Elemental Hyper Beams, Draco Meteor, Secret Sword and Relic Song are tutor moves in BW and XY. In SM, only Volt Tackle and Dragon Ascent are added to that list. In DP, only the Elemental Hyper Beams and Draco Meteor were options. This might be worth considering for future backports. Thanks for the playthrough count cheat, and hope you don't burn yourself out too much with the upcoming content! Magic Coat is the move version of Magic Bounce, reflecting certain status moves. Cofagrigus is not going to be fun - the only damage-dealing moves it gets by level-up in Gen 5 are Ghost-type, and the only damage-dealing "special type" moves it gets in Gen 5 are Psychic, Energy Ball, Dream Eater and Grass Knot by TM. Its Special Attack stat is 95. Its Physical Attack stat is 50. I'm going to predict Garbodor ends up around D to F tier, and Cofagrigus is in Bruno by a mile. Just finished watching the video all the way through - thank you! It's now gone 2am, so I'm going to go sleep.

The reason why you don’t see it get giga drain by Tm is because the tm did not exist through gen 5-7 and came back in gen 8 which vol does learn
@1stCallipostle

I will say, getting it in the future and getting it by tutor the moment that tutor exists does kinda still warrant an exception. The intent for it to be able to learn it when it's there is quite clear

I think Volcarona should learn giga drain by TM, since it learns it by tutor in B2/W2. The only reason it did not get it in B/W is because gigadrain is neither a TM nor tutor move in those games. In general I think you should factor in the tutor moves from B2/W2 in the future when doing gen5 backports.
@6smeargle

Yes, I noted that as well. Gen V has Energy Ball as a TM, though, which Volcarona doesn't learn. Not sure why it can get Giga Drain and SolarBeam and not Energy Ball. In any case, the fact most of us are even discussing this is because Scott makes an effort with learnsets by using the "Debut Generation Default" logic. There are even Tutor moves included on this current learnset! So I would imagine there is a sound reason for any decision he makes -- decisions that are likely to be discussed in future produced videos or streams, or have already been mentioned! B2/W2 learnsets were likely an attempt by GameFreak to fill in gaps they learned about from BW, so considering those decisions makes sense for folks to do if attempting backports. We may learn more once Scott starts Gen V -which will probably be around New Years in 2026! Exciting!! In this case, maybe it was a simple oversight, or it was just a interesting choice gameplay wise, idk. Fun / more interesting is an important metric, too!

You made an interesting point about Giga Drain, that since it’s not in BW, Volcarona’s base games, that it shouldn’t get that move. I’d definitely make a case for using it though because you use FRLG move tutors to decide if a Pokemon should learn moves like Swords Dance or Rock Slide, even though FRLG are never a Pokémon’s base games. In my opinion, move tutors should be used more often to determine TM compatibility in past games. In this case where Giga Drain requires a Grass type in your party to get the TM, the answer isn’t quite as simple as that, but it could absolutely use that move in FRLG.

The level 70 Volcarona you can catch in Pokémon White let me destroy Cynthia quite trivially. Her Spiritomb could do practically nothing to it, so I could set up with Quiver Dance and then sweep. The main thing to watch out for is that the Spiritomb will set up with Double Team and then Sucker Punch while you attempt to hit it (+ pressure will make you use more PPs), but once you’re past that point, provided that you have enough PPs left, it should be fine. The fact that you catch it at level 70 also makes its slow growth rate practically moot.

Wild idea for the overlay; a toggleable window that shows money, plus the value of items to be sold (eg nuggets etc, TMs the pokemon can't even use, trash TMs) so when you're discussing money we can see your progress.

Scott saying that Torkoal isn't good is interesting when it's one of the best Trick Room sweepers in VGC. It makes sense - obviously that's a bad Pokémon for soloing because it doesn't have a partner to set up Trick Room for it, and it's pretty poor outside of Trick Room. Plus, it's physically defensive and in gen 3 all water moves, which it is type weak to, are special moves, plus there's loads of water types. It makes me wonder what would happen though, if someone whipped up a Trick Room Torkoal ROM where the speeds are inverted, say by having Pokémon's speeds in battle be recalculated as something like 999 minus Actual Speed so that the slower you are, the faster you go. Then we could find out, if Torkoal is allowed to always be in Trick Room, is it any good at soloing its debut gen? Could be one for the future!

Hey Scott late but you should clarify your rule as you say debut generation, you should say debut game. If your doing it by debuted generation you would also include tutor moves, TMs, and more that pokemon gets later on but if you say debut game it lessens it For example in gen 4, there were 3 different games released, DP, Platinum, and HGSS. Without specifying it makes it sound like you’d include moves say Drapion gets in platinum and HGSS via tutor and tm when you really mean “Diamond and Pearl only” It would help lessen confusion and the argument here about Giga drain because with how you worded it Volcarona does get Giga drain in gen 5, but not in the game you specifically picked to take it from

Kind of a wild idea. What are the chances of getting volcarona paralyzed before Roxanne to be at a low enough speed to not get rock tombed? I covered this a couple times, the Geodude's just use Rock Throw instead. It does help against the Nosepass though, but with how much damage the Geodude's are doing I'm not 100% sure it's worth it if both are going to damage you. A potential option is to go in with Paralysis and look for a Rock Throw miss with 2HKOs against both Geodude's. Then just pray that the Nosepass doesn't use a lot of Tackles because if it sees the KO with Rock Tomb it will use it even if Volcarona is slower.

So as a simple test: if a mon is wrapped, and wrap boosts accuracy, tentacool should never miss wrap (it's 90 accuracy, any boost should put that to 100 or maybe 99%). He is aware. Around Roxanne, he talked about it. Someone in chat suggested it and it got him thinking of consequences. Geodude would use Rock Throw instead. Between the runs he talked about it again. This time more convinced that Rock Throwing Geodudes would be a bigger problem since they were outsped and one shot. Instead of a few Rock moves from the ace he'd get the Rock moves of the mob.
