The Champion:
Alexander Volkanovski made his promotional debut on 26 November 2016 and increased his win streak to 11 with a second-round TKO against Yusuke Kasuya at UFC Fight Night 101. He then went down from lightweight to featherweight and fought Mizuto Hirota on June 10, 2017 and won the fight by unanimous decision. After this he fought Shane Young on November 18, 2017 in Sydney and won the fight via unanimous decision. His first KO win in the UFC came against Jeremy Kennedy at UFC 221 on February 10, 2018. In his return a few months later Volkanovski secured another decision win over Darren Elkins on July 14.
On December 29 at UFC 232 Volkanovski received the fight of the night bonus by beating Chad Mendes via technical knockout in the second round. This win set him up for a matchup with the former featherweight champion Jose Aldo at UFC 237 on May 11. Volkanovski dominated and won the fight via unanimous decision, and was now ready to take on the champion Max Holloway. On December 14, 2018 at UFC 245 Volkanovski beat Holloway via unanimous decision. This was a very close title bout and a few months later two was scheduled to rematch. On July 11, 2020 (UFC 251) Volkanovski successfully defended his title via unanimous decision.
Volkanovski was now scheduled to make his second title defense against Brian Ortega on March 27, 2021, at UFC 260. However, the fight was cancelled due to COVID-19 protocols. Not long after this it was announced by the UFC that Volkanovski and Ortega would be the coaches for the 29th season of The Ultimate Fighter. The highly anticipated featherweight title fight between Volkanovski vs Ortega is now set to go down September 25 at UFC 266, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Challenger:
Brian Ortega made his debut on July 26, 2014 at UFC on Fox 12 against Mike De La Torre. Originally, a first round submission (rear-naked choke) win for Ortega, the result was changed to "No Contest" after Ortega tested positive for drostanolone during a post fight screening. Subsequently, Ortega was fined and suspended for nine months. In his return on June 6, 2015 Ortega faced Thiago Tavares and won the back-and-forth fight via TKO in the third round. Both Ortega and Tavares were awarded Fight of the Night honors. After this Ortega faced Diego Brandão on January 2, 2016, at UFC 195. After being down against Diego's striking for the first two rounds, T-City Ortega rallied and won via triangle choke in the third round. At UFC 199 on June 4, 2016, Ortega defeated Clay Guida by KO in the third round. After winning the first round, Guida won the second round and looked to have the third won until Ortega rallied and won via a flying knee near the end of the round. Ortega next faced Renato Moicano on July 29, 2017, at UFC 214. He won the back and forth fight via submission in the third round with a guillotine choke. Both both fighters were awarded with Fight of the Night bonuses. In his following fight he faced Cub Swanson on December 9. Ortega was victorious in the fight, winning in the second round by guillotine choke submission. The finish put Ortega's streak at five straight fights won with a finish, which at the time was the second longest current win streak in the UFC featherweight division behind the champion, Max Holloway. The win also earned him the Fight of the Night and Performance of the Night bonus.
As Ortega continued to climb the featherweight rankings he was now scheduled to fight Frankie Edgar on March 3, 2018. He won the fight with an incredible knockout in the first round. In doing so, he became the first man to ever finish Edgar in MMA.
This win also earned him another Performance of the Night bonus. Ortega was now more than deserving of a title shot, and challenged Max Holloway for the title on December 8, 2018 at UFC 231. Ortega lost the fight by doctor stoppage at the end of the fourth round. However this fight earned him the Fight of the Night award.
After healing up from surgeries and changing up his team, Ortega returned two years later and fought The Korean Zombie on October 18, 2020 at Fight Island 6. Dropping Jung multiple times, Ortega won the one sided match by unanimous decision. Brian Ortega is now scheduled to face Alexander Volkanovski on September 25, 2021 at UFC 266 for the UFC Featherweight Championship.
