I have heard many coaches say that the most important element of the jump serve is that it travel through the air without spinning (float) from the server to the passer. This helps the ball travel on an unpredictable path, making it much more difficult to pass. The reason I built this clip was to illustrate that there are a lot of footwork patterns that can be used to accomplish this goal. They are all effective. Find one that works for you.

Thank you soo much! I love this video! I am a jump server, and trying to improve. The first option works for me best. Its also easiest for me. I would recommend this to new jump servers. I have been doing jump serves since before being a teenager, so now im really improved, thanks to the first option! Btw, nice choice of music.

The "toss first" example is definitely not a float serve. That's a topspin serve. You can see the topspin on the toss, and then more on the actual serve.

I totally agree with you. Servers could choose to use this footwork pattern and toss and contact the ball without spin.

It does. I don’t even play volleyball. It probably won’t float as exaggerative as in Haikyuu!!!!

Grishata Games no, they’re right. A lot of the serves have some top spin on them so it’s impossible for them to be floaters. It’s also very hard to tell since the video stops once the ball crosses to net.
