Today we gonna talk about the volleyball positions and their roles.
🔶 So, the first position is - outside hitter also known as the left-side hitter. It is the player with good jumping ability who carries the serve receive responsibility along with the libero. Outside hitter most often attacks the balls which setter sets to the antenna to the left side of the court. Therefore after the serve outside hitters place themselves to the left front position. Playing on the outside hitter’s position requires great all around skills because they play through the front row and the back row. Outside hitter’s passing responsibility makes them extremely important player for the team. They have to have the skills to pass, attack, block, serve and play defense.
🔶 Next position is Opposite hitter also called Right side hitter
This player has the similar role to outside hitter, also play front row and back row. Right side hitters plays near the right antenna and they are carrying attack, block, serve and defense responsibilities. The opposite hitter needs to possess solid jumping skills and have great blocking skills since they line up against the opponent’s outside hitter and need to be able to work with the middle blocker on blocks. The opposite hitter is the player who most often scores the most points in the team.
🔶 Setter
This position has great skills of setting. Setter aim to receive the second touch, setting it for an attacking player. A setter runs the team’s offense. He needs to have strong communication skills and make quick decisions on the court. Setter also needs to have good blocking skills because in front row position he plays against the opponent’s outside hitter who often carries big load of the attacking responsibility for the team. Setter’s secret weapon is a «dump shot» - surprise attack еxecuted by a front row setter to catch the defense off guard.
🔶 Middle Blocker (Center, Middle, Middle Hitter)
Middle blockers main responsibility is to stop the opponent’s offense. They play near the setter to execute fast attacks. On defense, the middle blocker blocks the center area of the net and has to be ready for the opponent’s quick middle attacks. The middle blocker reads the opponent’s hitters to set up block which stops the ball, or allows the team to dig the ball up. But they also need to move to either side to help teammates close blocks with the opposite hitter and outside hitter. Middle blockers need to have great attacking, serving and passing skills. Middle Blocker often the tallest member of the team.
🔶 Libero
The libero is a back row specialist who is allowed to play back court only. The libero wears a different color shirt and is allowed to enter and exit the game without substitution request. The libero can replace any player on the court and most often replaces middle blockers. Since playing in the back court only, the libero needs to have the best passing and defensive skills in the team. The libero need to have exceptional serve receive skills because often they pass a larger area than other serve receivers in the team. The libero is not allowed to serve the ball.
