I had an art teacher who was a Firefighter/ems. He was one of the coolest and nicest guys I ever met. I've met other ones too. They're heros and have my respect.

This is a big problem across the whole country that quite frankly needs to be addressed. It's hard when everyone works day jobs when you're on the clock. You can't just leave work to go respond to a call. People just don't understand that we aren't actively at the station all the time and that we can't be fully staffed all the time. It's not practical in most instances

Joe Garcia fortunately for us it’s not funds that are the issue as were town funded. it’s lack of membership

In NJ, by law, you cannot get fired for leaving work to respond to an emergency call (voly FDs and rescue squads), but that doesn't mean everyone has a job they can drop what they're doing to leave or that employers won't find another reason to discipline you.

@@ryanmikita619 no different than CT, however most people either work at paid emergency services and can’t leave work or work at least 20 minutes away so it’s not practical to respond every-time from that kind of distance

@@millrad and out of those so called 68% volunteer departments a lot of them get paid per call, for training, mileage reimbursement, some states even have pension plans based on years served. So that 68% is a rather skewed number and kind of negates the term volunteer.

School teachers are way over paid. Should cut their pay in half and pay the fire department instead
