Parkrun is a 5km race that takes place each Saturday morning at thousands of locations across the world. There are over 700 locations in the UK alone and each of those relies on volunteers who give up their time, not just on Saturday mornings, but throughout the week to try and make sure your Saturday morning 5km runs smoothly.
Simply put, Parkrun cannot happen without volunteers and it is not unheard of for Parkrun's to be cancelled because the minimum number of volunteers aren't available to make the event safe.
So it was time that I did my bit and donned the pink high visibility vest and went to my local Parkrun in Watermead Country Park, Leicester to be a Course Marshal for the morning.
This is a role I've done before and I wanted to make a video to show how easy it is to volunteer at Parkrun. I think lots of people (myself included initially) worry that it might be hard and they might do it wrong, but honestly it's really easy!
There are a variety of roles available at all Parkrun's. Some still enable you to participate in the Parkrun itself, but also roles are available if you have time constraints. For example, if you were available early, but needed to leave early you could be a course checker, a car park marshal, or asked to be assigned to an early marshal course post. If you wanted to have a nice chat, you could be a Parkwalker where you get a Parkrun and volunteer credit. If you couldn't get there until a bit later, you could be a Barcode Scanner. Fancy writing about your Parkrun experience? You could be the morning's Report Writer (getting you a Parkrun credit too).
The long list of roles is available at the link below and there are accompanying videos that further detail some of the roles.
My advice would be JUST DO IT!
