(29 Mar 2022) Ukrainian volunteers in the port city of Mykolaiv are working around the clock to supply troops and civilians with clothes, food, medicines and makeshift bullet proof vests.
Former soldiers and musicians work side by side in an old and chilly building, stacking boots and coats for their fellow Ukrainians.
Anastassia Alexeva, who heads the volunteer centre, says she does not know when the war will be over, but she is determined to help.
Violinist Olga Kukharenko says she has been working as a volunteer for almost a month.
"This place makes me feel needed and I know that my work is needed. I am helping our military forces, all our people," she explains.
The Russians took the Black Sea port of Kherson before trying to bypass Mykolaiv, a key shipbuilding centre halfway between Odesa and Russia-annexed Crimea.
But the offensive stalled and despite Ukrainian and Western fears, the Russians so far haven't pursued their efforts and marched on to Odesa.
If Russia's forces were to succeed in surrounding Mykolaiv, Odesa and several other ports, they would completely cut Ukraine's access to its coast.
