Cool fix, I might try this. I've used a short stack of neodymium magnets (about 5mm diameter and the stack is about 10mm) as I had them kicking about. They give a good strong hold but I get a little circle of dirt on the outside of the flap now where the magnet is behind it. FYI, the hinge replacements are now pretty cheap, you can get pattern ones on eBay for under a tenner, but I bet they take much longer to fit than what you've done here.

Last time the hinge system was 9 euros at Volvo, so if one has a reason to visit them might as well buy the original part at the same time. It has lasted for almosta 200 000 km for me now.

The door does not appear to close all the way, before or after the "fix". A new hinge is only $18 US - to me it would be much more preferable to fix it the right way.

Hah! I always thought the fuel flap is badly designed on the XC90 or something that you need to flip the metal bit to hold the flap when you're filling! Going to fix it up :) Thanks!

Lol, I doubt you're alone and I imagine there's a lot of Volvo owners who haven't had the car from new who think the wobbly flap is normal.☺

+sirobb Thumbs up with the videos by the way! I used your timing belt video to see what tools I need for doing a timing belt change. I changed the belt on the XC90 last Friday, along with a crankshaft seal. You have a very clear way of explaining things :)
@sirobb
9 жыл бұрын
+Povo That's great to hear you find the videos useful so thanks for taking the time to say. Much appreciated. Well done on the timing belt and doing the crank seal too. At least one of us does the job right. 👍☺ Did you need a puller and did you make your own crank lock tool?
@mtgPovo
9 жыл бұрын
+sirobb I bought a crank pulley puller from Amazon for 11 pounds. I also got a crank holding tool there. I didn't have a puller for the seal so I drilled a hole into the old seal, screwed in a wood screw and pulled it out with pliers. This made sure the walls don't get damaged by screwdrivers.

NLterror6000 €10 to replace an inherently weak part with another weak part is a waste of money. 5 pence for a lifetime fix is much better value.

rixkixx I drilled into the metal body. You can do the plastic instead but have to overcome the force of the spring to align the screw.

I believe a new part is available, and if so there must be a way to install it. So I am a little confused why one - especially this fellow, would use this option. It is quite "how are you doing" as Aussies would say.
