Thank you for the great video - just like your other Volvo ones I have watched - you do very clear presentation of the steps needed to complete the task. I have recently done the exact same job on my 2006 Volvo S60 2.4D with the Euro 4 diesel engine (291,612 miles). I found that you don't need to remove the under body trim beneath the radiator as there is a service hole directly beneath the drain screw. The thermostat unit for the Euro 4 engine is part number 31293698 and it is the same size and dimensions but with an additional hose connection. I would recommend using the Volvo metal gasket between the engine block and the thermostat and not 'instant' gasket. The metal gasket is part number 8636573.

Thanks for the information which will help others. I don’t think mine has the service hole you mention. As long as the thermostat isn’t leaking there’s no issue but if there’s a gasket available then fair enough, mine didn’t have one fitted originally.

Perfect!! I have this to do on my '04 XC70 - slight leak from the thermostat housing (I use green coolant) and getting to that bottom torx bolt was bothering me - nicely filmed and put together vid. Very much appreciate the effort putting this together.

Pretty funny that my steering pump pulley is damaged in exact same way 😅. Nice video, gained some knowledge on D5 maintenance.

I had to do my 2013 XC90 D5 Thermostats at 7 years! I was shocked it would fail so early. The easiest way to know you need to replace it is that the temp needed needs to stay in the middle with in 5-10 of running the car in 10-20 Degrees celsius. If the temperature needle is not dead set middle, change it. Also found DPF regen is not triggered if the car struggles to get to temperature so you may get a "clean DPF" message.

hi , why you don't put a seal between the engine and the thermostat?

I wonder if the old thermostat had an intentional hole in it. I believe some other makes of cars have a small hole to help bleeding of their cooling system, but too small of affect warm-up.

You mentioned that the 6 speed conversion has increased your mpg, why would this be? Is the FDR of 6th gear higher and causing the car rev more at speed compared to the 5 speed?

Hi Another great video as always I have a 2002 S60 d5, How long does your car take to get to running temp now ? Why did you not just change the thermostat itself, Thanks Dave

Hey man. Love the videos of the V70 I’ve just bought a 53 plate V70 2.4 D5 Everything runs perfect, it’s sitting just under 200k miles. However, it’s loosing coolant, not lots, but enough to need topping up every two weeks or so, however no sign of coolant anywhere, the heaters work perfectly, it doesn’t overheat. I’m doing the belt & pump soon as it’s due, I’ve read online that sometimes the head gasket can go on these engines, causing the car to loose coolant over time, have you heard of this? Thought I’d ask as you obviously know Volvos a lot better than myself! Cheers man

If you have no visable leaks in or around the engine bay you need to check the carpets in the car, the heater matrix may be leaking, as a rule unless it has been seriously abused and neglected head gaskets rarely fail on the D5.

What type of coolant you use? I spent days to find any info about original or acceptable type. Theoretically it is G11 but my 2004 d5 has light yellow coolant now and I need to replace.

I don't know what's correct but you have a few options. I switched to blue. One of the most important things is not to mix colours.

Thanks. Of course I do not mix them. Chosed the Mannol G13 greenish coolant, disadvantage is it has phosphats so need to replace in every 2-3 years. Before new coolant I flushed the system 3 times with 17 liters of ionchanged water. Strange thing only about 5.5liters of coolant I could drain from the engine drain plug and the radiator hose at once, manual says 12.5 liters…

What size is the torx key used to remove the bolts for the thermostat housing?
