I appreciate this video... A few things: 1. You pushed in the seal (with the volvo tool attached) by hand. Mistake. The tool is a press that ensures it goes in Perfectly straight and doesn't mar or damage the outer lip of the seal. It should be turned by a wrench until seated. Also, before putting the seal in I would first buff the aluminum hole smooth and then apply grease to the clean hole for the seal to slide in on. Lastly, go get yourself an impact driver so you don't need to waste energy on drills and air tools. Do really appreciate this video 😊 ty ~

Heads up for 2011 XC70 non turbo people. I just did the service... belt, water pump, tensioner, idler pulley, decoupler... and it was way easier than MY 2011. Way fewer parts to unbolt, no PS pump in front of the water pump and no need to align the A/C bracket with a jig. Got it done in 3 hours.

I need to replace the drive belt , can you post the steps or what to watch for, and do I need to replace the Idler pully, and decoupler or just buy the Kit fron FCPEuro (Volvo Accessory Drive Belt Kit - INA 30757007KT), this my first Volvo but i have done lots of other work on my other cars

@@joey1917 I have a write up from when I did this., but it’s long. If you give me some way to send it to you, I’d be happy to do it. IMO, if you’re going in this deep, replace all the parts that he shows in the video.

Awesome..thanks for sharing. Will watch all the parts and purchase the tool. I ordered the belt kit from FCPEuro but never got around to the job. XC70 is pushing 140K and I'm not super sure if it was done before. From what I can see the belt is still on good condition, Gates logo is still very clear.

Awesome videos - thank you for sharing them with us! I have a 2015 XC60 T6 with the same oil leak. Before the leak developed, there was a grinding noise (it's still there) from the belt area. My guess is that the noise could come from the pulley you removed/replaced or from the bearing inside of the READ. What is most likely to cause the seal to deteriorate; the pulley or the bearing inside of the READ? I am asking because I would like to determine whether replacing the seal and the pulley is worth it. Many thanks.

Well, all I can tell you is this: I ended up replacing my leaky seal only to get a grinding noise appear 2 years later. Turned out to the the READ unit that had play…I’m talking LOTS of play.

That' a lot of play. I guess you did not notice that sort of play the two times you replaced the seal. Did you have a leak before you replaced it the 1st time (when you did not have the seal install tool)?

Hey, is the lip seal the only source of oil leak for your car? Did the READ timing covers and the rear main seal leak for your car? Thanks.
@Bigtime_mcalpine

Yes, that was the only source of oil leaking for me.

What a great channel, and great video! I just picked up an 09 XC70 this weekend with 377k kms. I'm going through it, replacing most of the drive belt accessories. This thing was never maintained. This really helped me out to change out the water pump. VIDA only shows so much, but you need the practical part to get a good idea of what to do! Do you think I can borrow that coupler removal tool? I figured i'd change that seal too, since it's all apart. I'm up at Bayview/7

Rawad El-Debs I actually borrowed the seal tool from my volvo friend in Mississauga. Send me an email at pierre_mcalpine@rogers.com and I will add you to our GTA volvo group so you can reach out to him directly.

@@Bigtime_mcalpine Hey. How did you know that you have to replace crankshaft pulley first time? I have a noise of worned out bearings coming from engine bay when idling. I replaced tensioner, idling pulley and belt but noise didn't go away. Thx

@@adamsolowianiuk9462 Hi Adam, there was nothing visibly wrong with it but I damaged it slightly when I removed it so I figured I should go ahead and replace since it’s a maintenance item anyway. When they fail, I think i remember reading that they lose their ability to hold tension when rotated in one direction or something. I don’t think your decoupler pulley would be the source of noise. My guess: AC compressor clutch bearing which I think I also replace in this video.

Thanks. Great video. I have to change out my auxiliary belt and tensioner and was wondering if the AC compressor has to come out and I need to buy the 9997262 jig? Do you have any suggestions on service manuals? I have a 2011 and 2013 XC70 T6 I need to start doing maintenance on them myself because $168 / hr shop fees seem ridiculous to me in AB.

It’s been a while but yes, pretty sure the ac compressor has to come off it’s mounts. I’m told that for 2012 + the jig is not required. As for a manual get yourself an eBay version of Volvo VIDA. It is what the Volvo mechs use. Comes on a CD. Not the most straight forward thing to install but if you are good with computers you should be fine.

@@Bigtime_mcalpine thanks for the guidance. Would you happen to have an eBay link you can post as an example? I assume this is for just the software that contains the manual not the diagnostic tool.
