I thought this all sounded familiar...back in '14 I got a new Gaming Laptop that could FINALLY play Skyrim! I did a play-through in Vanilla, and then did HOURS of research and apparently listened to this (but the older version), cuz it sounds so familiar. I had never modded a game before. I was so nervous. But it worked a treat! Perfect! ...until a couple years ago when my NMM decided "I quit". There went my Skyrim, there went my FO4. Now I've a new gaming desktop and now there's Vortex, so let's try again, shall we? :-)

Not entirely. It still leaves a number of blank files and folders in your data folder that did not exist before, even after completely disabling and removing the mod. Granted, it is a very small amount of space used (only KBs worth) but such is the limitation of using a system with hard links rather than a true virtual file system.

Regarding uninstalling mods, Gopher did not mention that there are many mods that should NOT be uninstalled directly from the mod manager. Some mods should first be disabled in the game menus, and other mods should not be uninstalled *at all* because that *will* corrupt the save files. Gopher should have added that for each and every mod the user should read the recommendation of the mod developer.

Could you do a video of the difference between MO, vortex and NMM? because i do not know (and i feel like more people too) if to choose this over MO, because we do not know the advantages of one over the other (for example, does vortex have priority system incase of a conflict in files like MO have?. Good video as always
@Krongfah
6 жыл бұрын
Well, this is just an educated guess but, Vortex is being developed by MO's developer in conjunction with NMM's team, so I'd imagine it has similar or superior system. I know that we can reorder mods in the modlist but I'm not sure if it also changes mod priority.
@PeterRockstead
6 жыл бұрын
MO's developer left MO to work on NMM, so MO is probably out. NMM's developers and MO's former dev left NMM to work on Vortex, so NMM's probably out. Vortex is likely the best option from here on out.
@Krongfah
6 жыл бұрын
Well, I doubt it's gonna be the best option on release since it's still missing some of the features MO has, but as it's being developed and updated it'll be the go to mod manager in the near future.
@Neronix17
6 жыл бұрын
Vortex uses a similar system to MO, but actually functions in the background pretty differently, being developed by MOs developer with the NMM team as noted by +Krongfah Mahankalarp. The problem is that Vortex is still buggy as hell, fails to install half the mods that exist on Nexus for some games (Oblivion mods are particularly screwed by it, I've yet to test many of the games but I'd assume it struggles with plenty more considering the early stage of release) although it seems to handle Skyrim decently enough if that's what you want to use it for. Vortex does have a superior but more complicated conflict handling system, where you can tell it that X mod requires Y mod, but that Y mod has to be loaded before/after Z mod. MO having a much simpler but less capable drag & drop list of what order to load means it's easier but can be more difficult adding a new mod to an existing install, with the Vortex system you could add a new mod, tell it what mods you know it need and has to be loaded before or after and it should handle any conflicts easily, it will also tell you exactly what files conflict just like MO does. The main thing you need to know is that despite the bugs in Vortex, that will actually get fixed, it's being worked on. Mod Organizer is dead, the developer is working on Vortex and it never officially worked for Skyrim SE (it did through an unofficial update but that was broken as all hell). If you are starting from scratch, use Vortex, if you are already using MO, stick with it for now and switch next time you start fresh, technically you can import all of your MO install but for me that didn't work properly and I ended up with a broken install so I'd avoid doing that for now. NMM is dead, and should stay dead as it has always been a horrendous mess that was almost guaranteed to fail at some point with continuous use.
@RXTRUX1

It's actually looking quite good so far. Wrye Bash is my primary mod manager, but I do use NMM for Fomods that can't be easily repacked. Eventually, there's a pretty good chance I'll replace NMM with Vortex for those Fomods, assuming that it too can peacefully coexist with Wrye Bash.
@CSharkBytes

I use NMM as a backup installer for Wrye which is and has been my primary manager since Morrowind. I install mods with both managers. Yes, more disk space used, but I do not care about that. I do make BAIN packages whenever possible and will use NMM to install unruly mods and then take that and taylor it for Wrye installs. Wrye still has a more elegant installer. I also love the installers tab as you can see at a glance all your overrides and can see quickly what mod takes "wins" in conflicts and the easy anneal feature that I love. I hope that it can be used as a secondary manager because Wrye will always be my #1 for the foreseeable future as neither NMM, VOrtex (so far) or MO has impressed me enough.

I feel like the uninstall and completely delete the mod could be a little vague for someone who hasn't seen a tutorial. I think instead of having "remove mod" and "remove archive" it should say "uninstall" and "delete mod" because people may not realise that you need to remove the archive to completely uninstall a mod (edit. And have another option that says "delete archive only).That could make things a little clearer. Also having the check boxes a little bigger could help. They seem a little small compared to the rest of the window

We need to know how easy or not it is to migrate a fully modded game using NMM or Wrye or MO over to Vortex. Can it be done or is it a total reinstall like it was when going from the 56 ver of NMM to the 6 version was. Because that one really sucked eggs and did not work well with complex mods. Why would you do that? MO is really superior in pretty much every way. I could not live without the Conflict-Detection and being able to manually decide which File you want to use. In Vortex, I think the Game just overwrites all Files, so it all depends on Install-Order, which is kinda horrible.
@DARCQ
6 жыл бұрын
Andarus this is true but as I said, I might. As of right now MO is really unstable and I have to constantly fix things which drives me absolutely nuts. But it is as you said way superior. So yeah if I'm going to switch it will be a while, first I want to see where this goes.
@GophersVids
6 жыл бұрын
If you have already modded a game with MO I would not recommend giving that some thought. Vortex is probably going to be a replacement for NMM, but I think it will be a while before MO users want to make the plunge (if they ever do). The sorts of features that drove people to switch to MO in the first place are not yet implemented with Vortex. However if you switched to MO and found you really didn't use any of it's advanced features, Vortex may be a good choice, but even then you should remember that it is still in Alpha.
@Andarus

MO 1.3.11 and MO 2.1 are super stable for me. 2.0.8.3 was pretty buggy, but 2.1 fixed most Bugs.

Gopher yeah I have a Skyrim SE game on MO, but I'm thinking of starting a new Fallout 4 play through, so I might try this out for that. But if I'm going to switch for good it'll definitely have to be out of alpha probably even beta. And as I do use the advanced features it'll probably have to improve in that regard to. But besides all that, it does show some good potential.

So I gave Vortex a try and setting it up as really smooth and I liked it until I got closer to getting into the game.. The dependencies are hard to sort out, the exceptions, rules all slow down the process of getting into game.. the Deployment is awfully slow.. Adding mods from one folder to the data folder then back again just seems completely unnecessary.. The mod manager looks great, was good to set up at first but it just becomes weird and seems like a lot of work around just to maintain a decent stable load order.. MO2 is still much easier to use, sort and detect issues imo.. I think if Vortex had a drag and drop left window pane like MO as well as MO's virtual bridge then Vortex would be perfect.. but then again if it had that then it would be a fancy looking newer version of MO.. Needless to say I am back with MO

At 6:15 this is why I can't use MO or Vortex. I want to keep my downloads a.k.a "things I don't use" on my 1To HDD. But I do want to REALLY move my enabled mods to the game's install data folder to benefit from my 250Go SSD's load times. For that precise use case, HARD LINKS BACK TO THE HDD ARE NOT APPROPRIATE.
@ravencorbie6728
6 жыл бұрын
I keep my downloads separate on my HDD with MO. Gopher didn't go over this in the first video, but it appears to be the same as MO: When setting up your links for Base Directory, Downloads, and Mods, you don't have to keep the downloads as Base Directory/downloads. You can enter in a different location by browsing. Or you can keep the downloads folder for MO/Vortex empty and just use the Install From Download option instead of Download With Manager, and install your mods from anywhere (as Gopher showed with the mod he downloaded to his desktop in the previous video). In that case, the Remove option will probably not remove the archive, since that system is probably directed to the downloads directory you set up in Vortex (this is how it works in MO, and looks similar in Vortex, but I'm not using Vortex right now, so can't tell you for sure). But of course, you can stil manually delete the archive from whatever folder you put it into. I keep all my inactive mods in separate folders because I'm paranoid about something I might want in the future being hidden by the mod author just when I want it, but don't want those mods in my downloads folder for MO. So I download manually to the specific folder, then move it into the MO Downloads folder when I am ready to install it (because I like having the meta data, and you only get that when the download is in the downloads folder -- the one you told it to point to in set-up). I keep the mods in the MO Mods folder in my SSD, as Base Directory/Mods, so they benefit from the SSD's load time.

There are some mods where i would want to increase the size of the popup window when installing the mods so that i could see the pictures more clearly, but unlike nmm, vortex does not allow this, or i have not been able to figure out how to do it, instead you have to hover over the option and click on the picture, i find this very very annoying as i cannot see the differences clearly and as easily, i really hope vortex adds the feature to rescale the popup window.

I'd like this as well. Something related to this is when I've installed the "Main" plugin for a mod then installed an "Optional" plugin where it's suppose to replace the original mod's ESP or other data files. With NMM, I'd usually get a message asking if I wanted to "overwrite" said files, but Vortex doesn't appear to have that option. Instead, I just get an "incompatibility" message. Any instruction on how to resolve this sort of thing would be appreciated.

Gopher, one thing you didn't cover, were mods that when installed by NMM, you must create and use an uninstall chem in-game before removing with NMM. Homemaker is one. How does Vortex deal with this? Inquiring minds, and all that.
@Vladimir_Kv
6 жыл бұрын
Exactly the same. In-game "uninstallers" and "disablers" (Fallout 4 chems and Skyrim MCM options) have nothing to do with how you manage mods on the outside, and have everything to do with how mods affect in-game functions or scripts. Mod manager tools are unable to clear such changes. You always have to use provided in-game "uninstall" option if you don't want to loose your save files.

I keep looking for actual help to install skyui but it needs the script extender which is where I'm stuck and the how to video sucks so much it is 25 seconds long explains nothing and I don't get the description because I can't visualize it. Can you help? I should specify I mean with vortex.

Quick question, do the mods are that you are currently TRACKING carry on from nexus into vortex? Cause I’m waiting to download my mods for when I get my new pc, and I have tracked all the mods I plan to download. It will be a pain to find and downloaded 200 mods again after tracking them in nexus

Drag your downloaded mods into ''Drop URL(s) or File(s)'' at Downloads section. Just like installing mods manually.

i don't really want to go through all of these videos in search of one thing so i'm just going to ask. in nexus mod manager there was a way to save a group of mods like a preset so i could switch between my group of mostly esthetic mods and my group of mostly adventure mods if for some whatever reason i didn't want both at the same time, lets say its to many mods for my computer or something, is there something like that for vortex and if so how do i do it?

Does SKSE work in the same way on Vortex? Cause I remember when using NMM it had to be set up in a very round about way that you couldn't use the original start up

So am I to understand that exe installers are to be installed without the use of a mod manager? I'm asking because I recently installed Morrowind code patch through Vortex, but the install options menu DID NOT pop up, so i had to disable it and install it manually to enable some additional options that are not active by default.

Will you be doing a tutorial on how to import your mods from NMM to Vortex?

Quick question, in the settings for FO4 there is only one option for the mod staging folder, and one for the deployment method, I guess it is an update of vortex right?

I was messing around with Vortex and it was going alright until I realized that it didn't actually import any of my mods from NMM. So I'm going back to NMM at least for now. Maybe for new games in the future I'll try Vortex again. But for a game that I've already downloaded 100+ mods? It's just too much work. I felt like the big blocky look was just too... smartphone feeling for me. I don't like that interface on my PC - personal preference. They also need a way to clear out your downloads section. It was far too easy to get lost and lose track of what you were downloading and what hadn't downloaded and the sorting function barely worked. I also didn't like how it handled conflicts. I just felt like it wasn't clear enough what I was doing. I don't know. Maybe I'll wait for it to reach Beta version before I try it again.

Does Vortex have a profile system? I really like that in NMM. I have characters I use different mods for and do switch between them from time to time.

gadman85 Yup, you can have different mod installs and load orders for different characters, they go under Save Games.

Good to know. I'll probably still wait before switching over to vortex, but this is very important. Thanks for answering my question.

Yeah, but different profiles aren't enabled by default, you have to go in the settings to enable it or I believe there's a button on the dashboard that enables them
