Things to keep in mind... before this episode, Voyager's encounter with the Hirogen was less than successful, and in 'Killing Game' episodes, they overpowered the ship and captured it. The very first Hirogen ship was impervious to Voyager's phasers due to the monotanium hull plating. Between those encounters and this one, there's about 2 or 3 years gap. Voyager did manage to get in contact with Starfleet however when they first discovered the Hirogen and their relay network, second time was in Season 6 (pathfinder episode) which was when Voyager also transmitted ALL of their data back to StarFleet (which probably included all of their encounters with alien species as well as tactical data). The first data stream that SF sent back to Voyager contained tactical updates, and plethora of other things. Also, there was a Borg drone from the 29th century which was created in Season 5 when Seven's nanoprobes assimilated the Doctor's mobile emitter. That drone enhanced Voyagers weapons and shields for the confrontation with the Borg sphere. Plus, the Hirogen were doing some extensive work on Voyager when they were gutting it to expand the Holodecks - its possible some of their technology was integrated into the ship, or Voyager managed to negotiate some data on the Hirogen technology when they arranged the cease fire. I would imagine that One's upgrades to Voyager's systems as well as subsequent tactical updates the crew received from the Alpha Quadrant were enough to help Voyager modify their weapons to be more effective against Hirogen ships - or the crew managed to do it on their own (they did have years to work on it, and the ship was modified extensively to adjust for various alien encounters, including the Borg - so it stands to reason the ship would be able to present itself as a match to Hirogen ships eventually). And finally, there was that Hirogen technician onboard who worked with the crew, providing more data to help Tuvok fine-tune their weapons - I would imagine the Hirogen weren't doing nothing in those 2 or 3 years either.
@deksroning125
10 жыл бұрын
***** I don't think monotanium was unknown in the alpha quadrant - otherwise, Voyager's sensors would not be able to identify it as such upon their first encounter with the Hirogen. But yes, you pretty much said most of the things I already mentioned in my original post.
@deksroning125
10 жыл бұрын
***** Here's the extract from the first encounter with the Hunters: KIM: The ship has some kind of monotanium armour plating. It's scattering the targeting beam. It is very likely that the Hirogen ship was constructed of some kind of a Monotanium composite that incorporated other materials, creating an armour which could have a moderate/high level of protection against most directed energy weapons. They perceive themselves as 'hunters', as such, it stands to reason they would like to avoid becoming 'prey' to other species whenever possible, increase stealth and make it very difficult to become a target. The Federation went into a different direction in terms of hull materials. Duranium seems to be their composite material of choice... and its very likely it is highly flexible when it comes manipulating it with energy fields, etc. but could also incorporate other aspects that make it more 'future proof' - such as infusion with other material composites that could conceivably make it extremely strong/durable compared to to other materials (though at this point, we don't know). The Federation is not a hunting species... though they do have a plethora of technologies available that could easily rival other species in terms of combat capabilities and defence... they simply refuse to use them (most of the time - but Federation ships have demonstrated ability to be modified heavily on the go with these technologies) because they aren't looking for a fight. EDIT: In an episode called 'Prey' - Voyager crew did gain access to a damaged Hirogen ship and its database. At the time, I would imagine that they barely had enough time to scratch the surface of their technology and other Hirogen ships were only hours away. That's why their weapons were having little effect on their hulls. The next encounter involved 'Killing Game' where we saw 4 Hirogen ships next to Voyager. Granted, this encounter did occur about 2 weeks later, so its possible the crew devised a way to damage the Hirogen Monotanium hull armour... but sheer numbers would tip the balance into Hirogen favour either way. Its possible that Voyager managed to destroy 1 or two ships before the Hirogen boarded the ship - though we don't know. Add to that subsequent time until they met the Hirogen again 2 and a half years later, and Voyager would likely devise an even better offensive/defensive capabilities.

In addition to what 'Intrepid Voyager' stated, Voyager also received tactical updates from StarFleet in their data stream using the hyper-subspace technology from season 6, which is probably what the crew incorporated into the ship. Adding to that, there was an episode 'One' in which a 29th century Borg drone enhanced Voyager's phasers and shields (and possibly other systems). But yes, this was a surprise attack, aided by a Hirogen technician.

Number of phaser arrays does not = firepower. They're not like cannons attached to the ship. They draw power from the ship's warp core and impulse engines. Larger ships are more powerful because they have larger warp cores which produce more energy. The sole exception to this rule was the Defiant, and it's stated that it has energy production too great for a ship of its size (hence "nearly tearing itself apart" in tests) plus it has none of that energy going towards any extraneous labs, sensors, holodecks or anything else. You could wrap 600 phaser arrays around the outside of a ship. That wouldn't give it more firepower if a tiny outdated warp core was feeding them power.
@Duskofdead
10 жыл бұрын
Also as a post script, the Defiant really only fired phasers from two cannons in the front of the ship, and one beam would sometimes fire from the dorsal of the ship. So if # of phasers = firepower, the Defiant should be a weak ship.

I'm curious about something; perhaps you could help me. Did the Defiant's warp core generate more power than that of the Enterprise-D?
@Duskofdead
10 жыл бұрын
Honestly, it was never stated in canon one way or the other. There are many speculative numbers floating around the net but a lot of that info is from the DS9 Tech Manual which was kinda infamous for being wildly inaccurate with its numbers, ship sizes, and information. It would likely be more accurate to say that the Defiant produced as much power as a larger starship, maybe something in the cruiser size range, while being far smaller and putting ALL of that energy into weapons and shields rather than any of it going to things like labs, sensors or holodecks.
@stevencohen624
10 жыл бұрын
Duskofdead Thank you. Yes, that makes sense. Since the Defiant was primarily a warship it wouldn't have to channel its power into other systems, as you mentioned, extraneous labs, etc.
@Duskofdead
10 жыл бұрын
Yeah the problem with DS9 is that since the Defiant became the "hero ship" of the show after it was introduced, it of course looks like it's as big and as powerful as any of the very largest starships, and frankly, what would even be the point of building something like the Enterprise-D or the Enterprise-E if something 1/20th the size had similar warp power capabilities. So I tend to dismiss the fanthink that somehow the Defiant could 1v1 anything in the Trek world. To me Riker's comment of "tough little ship" was a strong implication that, while very powerful for its size, it's a piddly little thing compared to something like the Enterprise-E in terms of power.

They also managed to hold their own against a tactical cube, destroy a borg tactical sphere, defeated species 8472, was kicking the ass of a fleet of kazon battleships before bushhair Mcboomring decided to blow himself up. They beat quite a number of different ships in 1 on 1+ engagements. Technically whilst not necessarily canon they also beat a forge probe and destroyed the forge station. Point is Voyager is notably very tough, and has had alot more success than most starfleet ships in combat scenarios, in it's era the defiant class was probably the only other ship class to rival it, and then the lakota eventually too. Voyager, at least from Star Trek terminology, is a long range scout, "quick and smart". She could be classed as a light cruiser, but isn't. Excelsior is a heavy cruiser, but into the TNG era, you'd probably class her as a medium cruiser, or a heavy cruiser with the Galaxy/sov and similar size vessels being classed as dreadnaughts or heavy battlecruisers.

As Enterprise (Columbia and Enterprise) showed us, another ship can happily support it with its own warp field. Surely the Hirogen would notice their warp field was odd if it had Voyagers own warp field inside it just 80-100 meters directly behind them?

The ship they're fighting consists of holograms, holograms that are modelled after Alpha and Beta Quadrant races.

I'm not sure if I remember that right. Was that the one with the Hirogen fighting against Klingons in close combat on the holo deck?

Never seen Voyager's phasers so powerful as in the opening volley here. I wonder why they revert to a less powerful looking orange phaser, from the initial yellow looking phasers

surprise attack and they had a hirogen teck on board giving them the information on the ships weaknesses. Its easy to seem powerful when you know exactly where to target to disable a ship. Remember apart from this voyager was outgunned in every fight with the hirogens

If you would describe them in naval terms: Galaxy Class=Heavy Cruiser Intrepid=Destroyer maybe Light Cruiser Defiant=Monitor (except it boasts superior defenses as well as speed) Of the three only the Defiant was originally designed to be a warship thus superior to the Galaxy. The Galaxy was designed to be a ship of exploration but with enough firepower to be a considered a warship. The Intrepid was designed to be a fast ship of exploration but not with enough firepower to be a warship.

Never understood how an Intrepid Class was able to almost collapse the shields of a Hirogen ship. Their shields, armor, and fire power are superior to Voyagers.,

"I've found it wise to never underestimate the Federation's technical skill..." --Gul Dukat. Simply put, they studied their encounters and used new technologies to even the odds. Typical Starfleet resourcefulness. Remember, Voyager had a year or so to study the Hirogen.

It actually comes close several times. It's powerful in one-on-one engagements and surprise attacks (like this one), but against a group of ships, its combat effectiveness goes down dramatically. This is because the ship has alot of phaser ports and torpedo tubes, but rather low shield power.

Actually for a ship of its size the Intrepid class has excellent shields. Note in the first couple of seasons of Voyager the ship could take dozens of hits from the kazon

@@RighteousPursuitMinistries People try to bring up that the Kazon were primitive. Yes they were but, they did control powerful ships that they seized from their slavers. The Kazon just didn't know how to maintain them all that well. The ships the Kazon used were Trabe vessels. We see the Trabe in one episode and find they only own one large ship now but, had effectively defended themselves against all the Kazon factions with one ship.

All the phaser volleys seemed to be coming from all the verified phaser arrays voyager had in this scene. Only difference is the phaser strips didn't charge, like they always used to. I dunno if that's voyager just being more advanced by season 7?

Then you will like Star Trek Online. You can equip any Federation ship with Tetryon weopons. Right now I have the Defiant with level 11 polaron pulse weopons and level 11 quantum torpedos. You could Even buy Voyager for $16.00 - $20.00. The game is free to play but some of the ships may cost money

Earlier seasons were a bit more realistic in regards to the ship's capability. By the end of the series, and even after all the damage they suffered, they had made the ship out to be some kind of invincible battleship. They even took on the Borg and won by firepower alone. A little ridiculous.
