The information in this video is another reason why I am glad I subscribed to this channel a while back. Back in the middle 80's, I spent about six months in a private college in a data processing major. I learned BASIC, RPGII, COBAL, and PASCAL computer languages. It was a rudimentary amount of knowledge, to be sure. Yet I learned that there will be we be a way to BOT be tracked using your computer. I learned how data is deleted from a hard drive (it's really NOT deleted). And I learned that ultimately the most insecure way to communicate data is through the computer. The creator of the software environment ALWAYS has a way to track things, unbeknownst even to excellent, professional programmers. Sounds like something out of a sci fi movie but the fact is, if you tell people something enough times, and from seemingly unbiased sources, they will believe it. Especially when you change the mind of the person as they are a child through the media and education. Thanks fo the video. Well done. God bless you. 🙏

Thanks for a great video! A lot my friends believe in every single myth you just enumerated and I'm also doing my best to explain these basic things to them. I use VPNs a lot at my job to access internal web services but when it comes to personal use the only thing that comes to mind is passing the censorship. There are some popular western services that are blocked in Russia by ISPs so I made a script on my home wifi OpenWRT router that preloads the list of blocked and censored addresses and subnets, marks the traffic directed to those subnets and then routes it to the internet via wireguard node outside of my country while everything else still goes to the net through ISP. That's the only case of VPN use for an average person that I managed to remember and I'm pretty sure that most people will not only get zero benefits out of VPNs but also get spied on even more that before, and they even gonna give their money for it. One thing that I would probably add to the video is to never connect a VPN server that is not ran by you or a person you completely trust. After all renting a small VPS will cost you the same money you'd probably give to a VPN providing company, but in this case VPN provider won't be able to sell you traffic details to advertisers

It infuriates me when KZitemrs read out the scripts handed to them and state that VPN's can make watching geo-blocked TV or streaming services possible in their location. I've been through several VPN's and not one of them hasn't had every one of their IP addresses blocked/blacklisted by every TV/streaming service out there. Even supposedly tech-savvy KZitemrs such as Snazzy Labs have done this and have even defended it by using the logic that they update their addresses often. They don't understand that it only takes a bit of code to do it automatically and rapidly. Simultaneously it's rare for VPN addresses to not be added to 3rd party databases such as spamming/bot which also make access to certain websites quite problematic.

@@yotonking2831 Express VPN works, too. Not every single server, but the chat support is good, so they'll tell you the servers that should work. Can't guarantee that they're gonna make this work forever, but I've had good experiences with the UK and US servers they told me, in addition to trying some French and German servers that worked. I think Express is a bit overpriced, but the support and the compatibility with streaming websites make it worth it for me. Loved the video btw, because people really need to stop thinking of it as an allround solution for everything. I use a VPN for two things: Geo-unblocking and securing my connection at wifi networks that aren't mine. There's a lot you can do to minimize tracking, but there's no way we'll be totally anonymous at every time without breaking most webpages.

Also worth mentioning is that many KZitemrs mention that it unlocks Netflix, PrimeVideo, Hulu etc. for all sorts of regions. That's incorrect. Netflix, Amazon and many streaming services actively add all the server IPs of well known VPNs to their blacklist. PrimeVideo will actually show you a message asking you to disable the VPN otherwise they won't allow you to watch. Netflix on the other hand is much sneakier. When they detect a VPN IP, they simply revert the Netflix library back to the country of the billing address. This way when for example someone from Europe uses a US based VPN in hopes to get access to Netflix US, they still see their own countries Netflix library, making the user think that Netflix US doesn't have different movies/tv shows.

• This collaboration was more inevitable than Thanos. • My biggest problem with VPN marketing isn't about privacy, but rather that one of their main features that the push is bypassing geo-blocking despite doing that is a violation of most TOSes and grounds for account suspension. That's a big problem because that's going to end up affecting a lot more users than any false sense of privacy. VPNs are scummy and selfish. 😒

I think one pretty safe way to navigate the internet and not be tracked is to: - Use portable OS(like Tails OS, for example) specialized in secure browsing and with every boot it starts from zero, it doesn't save anything. - Also using Tor browser. - No web site account or if necessary change them constantly. - If possible change your device/hardware from time to time to not have a constant ID device. - and using internet by way of SIM card on USB adapter which you'll throw away pretty frequently and get a new one. Thus no constant hardware and software ID can be made, and also they cannot be associated to any social identity. You'll be a John Doe. Maybe some adjustment and refinement to this method can be made.

When it comes to IP location tracking, this protects you from a very simplistic phishing tactic that logs your IP when you click an attack link so it can reverse-engineer your location. I use it all the time on dumb scammers that don't know how to protect themselves, but the problem is it doesn't seem to have repeatable accuracy, sometimes struggling to come up with the same province twice, let alone the same city. Besides, there's a very simple way to avoid this happening to you: *Don't click on links if you don't know what the domain is*
@javentesla7164
3 жыл бұрын
While inspecting link addresses and 'verifying' the domain helps a great deal avoiding threats to privacy and security that's only the tip of the iceberg. One way I don't see many people talk about is the 'Signal-to-Noise of Information' and how increasing the amount of useless data (noise) compared to the real data (signal) makes it much harder to determine interesting data from the useles data. This includes not using your name (real or alias), real or unique profile pictures, birthday, etc when making accounts on sites as one example. Another is to fill in said accounts with fake data like bio, career, status updates, etc. and to make sure login in times and usage don't match the other accounts. Login and log out times can be used to finger print users.

What I find humorous with all the VPN ads is that they usually emphasize how you can change your location so you can watch stuff that your country bans. I just start laughing as all you need is a proxy extension for that (had to use one to watch the summer Olympics live about a decade ago). So they try to make you spend money on something that is free 🤣
@Ironica82

@ I doubt it is. However, my point was that they always try to sell the VPN by focusing on a feature that you can just get a proxy for instead of focusing on the encryption aspect of it.

No, no no, that's simply not true!! Data collectors only know, which device was used, but not WHO has used that device! My PC is basically not different from a PC in an internet cafe. But what really concerns me is, that nowadays everyone believes that this one device is chained to a single person and the data is from a specific person. With face recognition it's a whole different story, but my devices have no cameras anyway. Or, do I miss something?

As an IT Analyst who deals with managing VPNs on thousands of remote systems daily, watching this video is hard. This video grasps at straws to make their points. Many of ther arguments are misleading in their own way. I definitely agree with the premise that VPNs are often touted as these mythical things that save us all from the big bad watchful big brother eyes when in fact they are more like a tool that serves a purpose but won't be a cure all for your anonymity woes. However, the people that wrote this seem to have written it without any real world experience. More like they just read a bunch of other people's opinions and consolidated it into one. There are some decent points to make, but its just as misleading as the VPN marketing itself.

It's really not. It encrypts your traffic to another country which has actual privacy protection laws and hides my activity from my over bearing government. Does it prevent them completely? No of course not. It just means I'm not the low hanging fruit which will be targeted first. Also unless they have a reason to go after me they aren't going to spend any significant resources trying to see what I'm doing online. Australian ISPs are required to log all data for years. I circumvent that by browsing remotely. All they are logging from me is a bunch of encrypted data.

I did an experiment: I have been using a USB port on my PC to charge my Android phone...OK, nothing interesting. I sat at the computer last week, and said the words "IKEA" and "Gorm" every few minutes. Within and hour, I was getting pop-up ads for shelving systems...like the Gorm shelving system made by IKEA. This is a PC, not a laptop, so no built-in mic or camera. The only live mic is in the phone! When the phone isn't plugged in to USB, the system is 'deaf'. Funny how that works. I have verified this with 'word preservatives', 'saddle-making supplies' and 'taxidermy'. It's actually handy; if I wanna look up a Pizza joint, all I gotta do is start chanting 'Pizza delivery', and the ads come! Doesn't do this on my Linux system, only Windows 10. I don't use VPNs for the reasons listed here but the same reason everyone is using them: To use the Internet the way we used to use it, downloading anything from anywhere, full access to whatever site we want, no data throttling. VPNs are crucial in the US where mobile carriers are throttling speeds aggressively. I could not have watched this video in 1080p on my connection without a VPN. Thus VPN is not people's desire for privacy but people's desire to return to normalcy. There is also some fearmongering here. VPN does not and cannot decrypt your already encrypted connections. It's just another wrap around your data and it's better than nothing provided the VPN is trustworthy. "In the long run, the aggregate of decisions of individual businessmen, exercising individual judgment in a free economy, even if often mistaken, is less likely to do harm than the centralised decisions of a government; and certainly the harm is likely to be counteracted faster." There has yet to be a precedent where a VPN snitched on every customer. But we literally have the Snowden files to prove that literally all US internet providers snitch on all of us. The upside is huge. I also don't like the fact that you brush over the dangers of Tor and that every nation state is snooping along the exit nodes just waiting for you. Tor is more anonymous on paper but it's that reputation that makes nation states look for vulnerabilities and spy on the Tor network even more so the risk is bigger. Plus all the negatives that you applied to VPN can be applied to Tor. Facebook will still know who you are if you log in through Tor. VPNs navigate much safer waters suitable for 99% of the population.

I think he might mean transfer rates. Some ISPs, generally countries without net neutrality will throttle connection speed depending on the type of content the user is accessing. A VPN may help bypass an ISP throttle rules, or it may help trigger throttling rules, all really depends on the ISP network configuration. But if he is talking about monthly data caps, then yah, a VPN does nothing.

We used VPN/PPTP back in early 2000s to access corp intranet, companies still do that today. That was what VPN was used mainly, to create a layer to bridge our home network with a destination network, in my example, office network. The consequence is that our machine is assigned a network node or IP in the destination network through which we do our work, or in today's usage, surf the web. The result is, we appear as though we are surfing from the office and not from our home. This layer is usually encrypted as well, and makes it harder for others from tapping the traffic while making network spanning multi-geolocation possible without costly lease lines. This later became popularised with using US VPN servers to access online services, fooling these services to grant non-US users US account access. Most common usage is Netflix where users elsewhere throughout the world has limited access to content found in US. This itself harks back to the stupid region coding restriction found in DVDs.

VPNs are great and accomplish their stated goals... on a reasonable scale. Wanna cockblock a copyright troll and avoid C&Ds? Proper usage of a VPN accomplishes that well. Wanna keep what you're doing with your internet access private from others/admins of a public access point? Also, VPN is great. Protects your privacy and what-not just fine. That's why I pay and use a VPN. Have no expectations of out-doing the NSA or whatever else.
