Italian Marco Pantani (Mercatone Uno) became the overall leader today after winning the fourth stage. In his first victory of the season, Pantani was followed in by the previous overall leader, Spaniard Javier Pascual Rodriguez at 41 seconds and by Swiss Beat Zberg and Dane Claus Michael Moller at 49 seconds.
Pantani turned the fourth stage into a climbing exhibition. He attacked on the toughest part of the stage, with two continuous climbs of Espuña and Collado Bermejo. Most rivals were eliminated quickly with only Pascual Rodríguez able to follow Pantani from a distance.
The only action up until the first climb was from Spaniard Juan Carlos Vicario (Fuenlabrada), who broke away opening a maximum advantage of 8 minutes, only to be caught at km 73. Until the climb of Espuña, at km 159, the other aggressors were from Santiago Blanco, Iñigo Cuesta and Mikel Zarrabeitia. The latter's attack was a sort of launching pad for Pantani and the latter quickly opened up a gap of a 1 minute on a select leading group. Only Pascual Rodríguez made any showing in the wake of the Italian but he also failed to retain his leader's jersey.
