Joel hi. Can the center tie rod be repaired. What i mean is can a machinist just change these tie rods?

Thank you once again, Joel! I have replaced so many front end bits, and still have Horrible clunking! I bet it's that pesky drag link! I was wondering if it had something to do with the idler arm, but I just don't understand what its purpose is, so I'm flying blind.

Sarah Woodruff thanks Sarah, the idler arm is just a pivot point for the drag link to move on. the early ones had a rubber bushing which fell apart and caused lots of slop and clunking, you can buy a bronze bush for them now to replace it

So the center rod's ends show (in the VW book) Spacers between connection in the drop arm and idler arms. NONE of the online part sites have them listed. in fact, you didnt install them either. KNow anything about these?

I have a 78 beetle and I have such a bad shack sometimes in the steering if I hit a bump in the road. I have taken it to so many peoples and they can’t find the problem, I have forked out over 2k already. Any pointers would be great. I live in NZ

Hey boostedvw. It's Nick from the samba and I was wondering if you can answer my question. My steering wheel seems to have a lot of play. Is this caused by the steering box. If so how hard is it to do? I have a 73 super beetle.

Hey Nick, try adjusting the steering box first. There's a round plug you can access the adjuster screw, just loosen off the lock nut and tighten it up a little.
