Very helpful thank you. I just bought a 2012 Touareg and while driving it home on motorway 🛣, had the ABS, Traction and electronic parking brake warning lights come on. Had a mechanic scan the codes and it came back with faulty rear left speed sensor. Getting it fixed today, but it's good to see how easy it is to replace and maybe worth keeping the old one and cleaning it up as a possible spare. It's seems like a common failure on the Touaregs so being able to swap out almost like a light blub is very useful to know. Also i think I might invest in a scanner, it now seems like a no brainer with modern cars being soooo electronic, I imagine it will save be money after 1 or 2 problems. Going to the dealer for a scan costs about £90. Thanks for making the video and greetings from Cornwall UK 👍🏻.

I would say if you're worried about them you could just order spares to keep on hand. I haven't really had much luck reviving an old one once it starts acting up. I have had decent luck with the cheaper aftermarket sensors though. I would highly recommend getting the VAG-Com and VCDS from Ross-Tech. Being able to easily read codes and interact with the vw specific modules is essential if you're going to do any work yourself.

Proud (and brave) owner of Scirocco 1.4 tsi petrol engine here... Hello! My testimony after this thorough and simple video (which I gratefully thank you for putting out!): - sensor replaced: lights still on; - magnetic ring wheel bearing replaced (it was needed and to further troubleshoot): lights still on. Since live data showed that rear left wheel sensor was soundingly collecting data and no diagnosis errors report other than right wheel: - Still need to check cables from rear left wheel up to abs control unit and if anomaly isn't from there, need to check fuses, voltage/power/etc from that end. ...this is an exhaustive process since I'm not a mechanic and these darn lights started their Christmas by themselves after 1 year of routine driving with no issue whatsoever... Hope still is intact but the headache factor of these little nothings that are of considerable number in VW systems and cars is starting to be very very annoying.

Very frustrating, I guess I got off easy with it only being the sensor. I'm a little confused though. . .If you're not getting any errors on the left side why check the wiring for that side? What software are you using to read your Error codes? The Wheel sensor are Hall Effect sensors and work off of induction produced from the steel tone ring rotating. Dirt(road grime) on the outside of the sensor should not have any practical effect. A damaged tone ring is something that people should visually check right a way. Excessive Rust can cause them to fall apart. As long as there are no metal particles shorting out to ground, it should work. That would be a lot of metal particles.

2013 VW CC sport, After battery died and replaced battery almost every single lite lit up. Airbag, ABS, Traction, Steering, check engine and AFS. To this day can not find problem, replaced left wheel sensors and lights went off. (code reader said left was bad). Then lights came back on now code reader says Right wheel sensors are bad, still have to change them. Another issue to note is sometimes car would start then stop, it would not run, I would have to disconnect negative terminal on battery, reconnect and then it would start. If I replace right sensors and problem persists it is a toss up of either a short in wiring somewhere or problem with computer or one of the CAN modules. Funny how one thing can make the entire car go wonky, it is a royal pain in the butt. But this is not the only thing in repair; one is headliner redo, repaired broken wire connector up front, replaced all brake pads, MAF sensor, wastegate valve, replaced grille with emblem (because somebody smacked it) and now radiator support shroud. Because I drove front over a concrete car stop which ripped bottom section of plastic shroud. Joy Joy happy joy, Not! I sure hope when I replace those wheel sensors it will solve most of my problems and hoping that I don't have turbo issues and figure out what's going on with AFS after replacing bulbs. I am happy I came across this video because it lets me know I am not the only one with these crazy issues and gives me hope. It's common to have codes and some lights when changing a battery, but most of those should go away pretty quickly. Hopefully the speed sensors will take care of a lot of your lights. It sounds like you definitely have an electrical gremlin somewhere. Between the Sportwagen and my A4 I have had my share of them as well. I would start by getting a VAG specifc scan. The VAG-COM will tell you a little more than a normal OBD2 scanner. I would also check your main battery ground, and then closely inspect wiring anywhere you had other damage. Good Luck!

Yes the speed sensor fixed my TPMS light. I know it's not true for all Vw's, but the sportwagen doesn't actually have TPMS sensors, it determines whether or not there's an issue based on the speed sensor input. At least I believe that's what I read when I first looked into it.

If the pedal is acting weird you may have bigger issues. Hopefully it just turn out to be the sensors. If it all just started happening since you did the wheel bearings then good chance at least one of them got damaged in the process.

It should. If not check the wiring. If it's not that, then it's probably the ABS module, which is going to be a bigger and more expensive repair. WIth as common as this is, it's probably just the sensor. Good Luck!

I have been a VW customer for YEARS (5 different VW's, 6 if you count the Karhman Ghia i had in high school). The wheel speed sensors are clearly a poor design. If VW can't, or won't, address this issue I have been subjected to 4 different times, - then I think it's time to say goodbye to VW. There are MANY other auto brands out there to choose from.

I have a 2015 Passat TDI and am having the same issue except mine is random. It goes off for a few drives, no issues then randomly comes on while I'm driving, then the next time I start it, it comes on again and yes I'm also having issues with the transmission jumping or just having delayed shifts. I was scared my transmission was going out but this gives me hope lol last time it was scanned I was told the front right needed to be replaced so im going to try that.

Mine started out like that. Then the lights stayed on all the time, but the shifting issue was still random. Good chance swapping out that front right sensor will fix your problem.

Do you have push to start? And did it start the engine or just come up with the lights? I have a 2013 hybrid with push to start. When I start, it shows all these lights but no ignition. I had to hold button for like 10 seconds to turn off, and I couldn't even auto lock from outside. I thought battery might have died? Oddly enough, I waited about 30 minutes and it started to work again but now IM kind of paranoid it will happen again. Not sure if this is the same issue, but I got all those lights as well as notifications for error brake, error airbag, error abs service now. I don't drive my car much because I have a work car so I put maybe 20-30 miles a week if that... maybe that's why? It always seems to struggle or lag with ignition.

Thanks for the video. I have been facing a similar issue with my 2011 Passat. The lights on the dashboard only come up when in a long drive +200 miles, then, if the car is stopped for a while, when restarted the error is usually cleaned from the dashboard. I'm not sure what is the root of the issue in my case.

Thanks for the excellent video. I wish I found this video earlier. Just paid $600 for the VW dealer to make this easy fix. It all started with my airbag light being on. They replaced the air bag controller ($900) and 2 days later all the lights came on. They then diagnosed the rear abs speed sensor. Was it the abs speed sensor all along?
@VHickleGarage

I don't believe the ABS sensor should have had anything to do with the airbag. Do you have a sunroof? My sunroof leaks have caused airbag issues, from corroding the passenger seat wiring harness.

@@ryanloughlin6380 You are right. Lol not sure what I was thinking with this old reply. I believe the airbag system may be related to the vss because it's made to not set the airbags off below a certain speed. This is also something I haven't confirmed, but as you pointed out I had the airbag light and then it went away with the new vss.

The sensor is very easy swap. 1.5/10 for Difficulty. Changing a caliper is certainly more involved. If anything is rusty or stuck make sure to spray with PB Blaster and let it sit overnight.

This same thing happened to me after I changed the setting for “Starting Vibration Reduction” while the ABS module was hot. Now getting a message that it has lost it’s coding, or improperly coded. Going to need to take my car in to have them generate the long coding to recode it I guess. I didn’t have a saved code before errors.

I haven't messed too much with the coding features, but I remember reading that you can cause some issues if its not done properly. Have you tried the Ross Tech site for help? I know they have a lot of info posted there.
@timeformetoact6

I’ve tried googling it, but turns out it uses LONG coding, 2017 GTI MK7. I was using OBD11 Pro, under brakes and Adaptation, then starting vibration reduction from OFF -> NORMAL - doesn’t really change that much. I think it glitched and thought I had more features than I have. I took it to a shop and they found it was coded for extra features, like front end collision and lane keep assist. This caused the ABS module to clear out code and go offline. It took the shop about 2 hours to code correctly and redo all the adaptations by driving and setting steering wheel position sensor. Car runs great now, NO 6 lights with of them 4 flashing.

You might get lucky and have the lights clear themselves after you replace the sensor. If not you may be able to take it to an auto parts store and have them clear the codes. I'm not sure if their generic OBD II scanner will clear them or not.

I believe the Speedo not working could be bad Wheel Speed Sensors, but I'm not 100% sure. With the work you had done it would seem likely that they either left a sensor unplugged, or damaged one. I would expect you to have warning lights like what I had though. You should take it back to the shop and have them scan it and fix whatever they broke.

I had to install a new fuse box (the one over the battery)(2004 Jetta). Upon completion of the installation, the ABS and Brake lights came on. Assuming the brakes/peripherals didn't suddenly go bad in my garage, could I have accidentally triggered this code, and need to erase it?

I also had all the dash warning lights. The only difference is that I didn't have to repair it. I had gotten to the live screen on my new Autophix 7610 scanner. (The instructions are mysterious.) I was looking for the tire pressure monitoring system but today I stumbled upon the brake system and found the four wheel sensors. It said the front left was not working. I took a chance and found and clicked OK on erase all error codes. THEY ERASED! All warning lightsl had gone out BEFORE while intestate driving but they always came back on before I got out of my driveway. I especially hated that my cruise control would not engage.Then I followed direction on the scanner and unplugged it and then reconnected the scanner. I scanned it for fault codes and it said NONE. I went back to the live four wheel sensors and all were listed. I put it into drive and all four showed 11mph. FIXED! I will keep my four sensors until I need them. I hope others, like me, used V. Hickle's video to stay out of the dealers shop. The 2016 Passat oil change last week, was advertised to include an inspection. I spent HOURS searching manuals and watching ALL these videos, when VW could have found and erased the codes in a minute. ( I thought they did.) I hope this works for yours.

next day I discovered it's not a torx 30 , it's a 5 hexagon for the sensor bolt. A small right angle handle or long bit would have helped. It was stuck on so a butter knife and hammer broke it loose. I used a sensor from Amazon which had all four for under $30. The scan showed it working and after a half mile the TIRE AND STEERING ANGLE dash light has not come back on. The ABS and TRACTION dash lights were flashing alternately and after a few miles they now flash together. The car has under 80 K. Fault code will not read (no communicate) BTW: it was a wet road and braking seems fine for hard stopping. NO CRUISE CONTROL AGAIN. It's going to the shop. SORRY

Sorry to hear you had to take it to the shop. Sounds like you may have something beyond bad sensors if you weren't able to communicate with the computer. I've always used the VAG-COM. I've heard the VAG cars can be hard to fully access with generic OBD 2 scanners, but weird that it worked for you the first time but not the 2nd.

I drive a 2012 GTI & I’m having all the same lights come on my dash but I’m not experiencing any gear hunting issues & no traction or braking issues as far as I can tell. I’m hoping it’s just a broken sensor or wire rip near the sensor, or I might just need new rotors and pads.

Best to scan to see what all codes you're getting. It's probably a bad sensor that just isn't giving you the other issues. Brakes may, or may not be related to VSS issues.

Have you scanned since you replaced the sensors? Cleared codes? I'm guessing you're throwing other codes if it came back. Either that or wiring is damaged. . .in which case you should still be showing a code for a bad sensor.
