Awesome and great video truly appreciate the help on these! I have 2 questions that might apply when I do this to my 74SB: 1. I have read in some sources that you need to lubricate (grease) some parts during the clutch replacement procedure (I think the throw-out bearing and the shaft coming out of the transmission), is this true and what do you recommend? 2. Is the re-alignment of the crankshaft with the transmission just as easy as putting the parking brake on and moving the engine until it "pops" into place, or is something else required? I just want to get this right the first time, thanks again! :)

I have realised my torque wrench is out of torque, so I believe I have torque the bolt to 17 ft lb, And the engine is back in the beetle, I did use good quality spring washers, So I am hoping they don't come loose, Do you think that just 1Ft lb, would make a difference,

Thank you John I truly appreciate that! 1971 super beetle did not come with a single port. So you have a different engine in there. I’m not sure if you would have the earlier clutch style set up. If so, you would notice the difference immediately on the pressure plate.

Hi Terrance! I never used to wear rubber gloves, until about a year ago. A lot of the chemicals like brake clean, and other things absorb into the skin, causing heart issues and blood cancer. @SladesVWBeetle
3 жыл бұрын
Let me try to look into that and find out a little more. I never had a type two transmission in a beetle before but I know it’s a popular thing to do for some folks. I imagine you’re going to have to use the pressure plate, and release bearing for a type two. I hope this makes sense but the motor doesn’t know what you’re using on the transmission. Trust me my friend there is never a dumb question.

Good job, I've got all this to put back together. I am wondering though.. My pressure plate has rusted since being off the engine. I was thinking brake clean and a scotch bright will bring it up.. Would you think that'd be OK to use still?
@SladesVWBeetle
3 жыл бұрын
Long as there is no pitting, it’ll be OK. But definitely use a green scotch pad, with some brake clean. And then maybe some 000 steel wool just to make sure there’s no scoring. Otherwise I wouldn’t be too concerned.

Hello, Slade. I’ve found that the pressure plate perimeter has a way of catching on the bottom edge of the flywheel. Yes, although the pressure plate seems completely-perfectly-centered, it’s not. When you go to tighten the bolts, it even seems that the edge of the pressure plate is perfectly inside the flywheel edge, because it is-on the upper portion of the pressure plate ... where your sight line is. But ordinarily you’re looking at the upper part of the pressure plate, because your head and eyes are looking from above. However, the bottom of the pressure plate edge can seem to be inside the flywheel edge, but often, it is not. You can even tighten the bolts and all seems well, until you take the car for a first run, and the clutch starts acting up. So, what I do is this: I get my head down below the pressure plate and position it from the bottom. This way, I can see if the bottom of the pressure plate is perfectly positioned inside the lip of the flywheel edge. Then, as I tighten the bolts, I check a few times and look from a bottom view to see if all is well. Naturally, while doing this, I also look at the sides and top. I had heard about this lip problem, but didn’t think much of it until once I actually looked below to see, and sure enough, the bottom of my pressure plate edge was close-but not perfectly inside the lip.
@SladesVWBeetle

Very good advice my friend! Thank you so much! Hopefully all went well with it. And you are right how you described it. My head is towards the top of the pressure plate, so I’m really not seeing the bottom part. That made perfect sense at what you said! Thank you so much for taking the time to type that out!! I appreciate it more than you realize.
