Coming from someone who has been both a certified VW Sales Consultant and Ford certified and have driven both many times, the ST is a more fun car to drive, you can get just as many options when you step into the ST3 package for cheaper, and I just bought one. Focus ST FTW.

Bryan Bastow bullshit. I just bought a 2017 GTI base S model for $23k. The ST I was looking at was base model, no options, and Ford was selling it for $26k. The base model GTI has as many options if not more, than an optioned out ST. Optioned out ST would cost over $30k. GTI is a better bang for the buck now

I test drove both these cars and its the ST that made me giggle. GTI is a nice car no doubt, but the ST's sound symposer, fake as it may be (not really though, its just amplifying) makes it a much fun car to drive. I would take a GTI with the ST induction noise. So many people underrate the noise a car makes. It is not the nicer interior or the 2door availability or the plaid seats that make you giggle.

July 2018 - My wife just bought a new VW and we love it. When at the dealership I was looking and asking lots about the GTIs. And noticed a few new and pre owned at the dealership for sale. But I'm also a Ford nut and love the look of the RS and ST Focus. I visited three Ford dealerships in my area and all of them had no preowned STs, only the biggest of the Ford dealerships has two new STs. "Can't keep them on the lot" said the sales man.

I seriously considered getting the ST but chose to get the GTI instead. The ST is fun to drive but honestly the interior feels cramped and uncomfortable. The Ricaro seats are really nice but I just can't find a comfortable position in them and the dash is messy and feels poorly designed. The GTI on the other hand feels much roomier and the seats are much more comfortable. The dash is very well designed as well and doesn't feel messy. It's not as wild as the ST but it feels more refined. As a daily driver the GTI is a much better option. It has performance when you want it and comfort and roominess when you need it.

Here’s my two cents. I own a focus SE hatchback 2014 with the dual clutch crap transmission that has already been replaced once at 60k miles. I have also been a proud owner of a 2014 GTi with the manual trans. I can say without a doubt that the build quality of the GTi is far superior to the Focus. Now obviously I don't own an ST version but after owning the ford and experienced the chassis I will go with the Mk7. I've driven the ST with the Recaro seats and they are just horrible for a 6ft tall driver. For a purist who likes torque steer then ST is for you.

I don't understand how some people don't see the brilliance if the DSG. the times are changing, and while I do appreciate driving manuals, the fastest cars in the world have a dual clutch automatic transmission. VW offers one of the best dual clutch transmissions for a low price compared to others ie. BMW, Audi, Porsche, or Ferrari. Manual transmissions are disappearing and what will you do then? Be like an old person resisting computers because typewriters did the job back in the day?

Mario Gonzalez-Dulche They're not saying they can't handle power, cannot shift faster than a person, or any of that. Rather, they're saying that for a person that really likes the driving experience, why would you want anything other than a manual? I don't get people that don't want a manual for a driver's car. Yeah, if you're a guy that wants to hit the quarter mile faster and with more consistency, then get an auto (just ask any mustang guy). If you want to carve through the mountains/canyons quickly and have more of an in-tune driving experience with your car, the manual fits the bill.
@mariodulche1944
9 жыл бұрын
+Jeremy Luder but that's not true for everyone...it's more fun for you. and i agree that it's the traditional way of driving and many old-school drivers prefer it, but i assure you that most of the troglodytes saying that manual is better just say it to follow the "cool guys" in the car scene...i've been in the car scene my entire life with real life car restorers, racers, showcasers, etc. and more and more people enjoy driving dual-clutch just because you can actually go faster and faster equals more fun
@jeremyluder494
9 жыл бұрын
Mario Dulche I agree with what you're saying and yes its faster, but there's no skill involved at that point other than finding the right line, throttle input, correct braking time, etc. While that sounds like a lot, its really not so hard with paddle shifters. To each their own. I have a Taurus SHO where I use the paddle shifters to have fun, but it never compares to being able to shift in a stick like I can in my 5.0. I guess I just feel more one with the car that way. I respect your POV though.
@mariodulche1944
9 жыл бұрын
+Jeremy Luder that's the thing, there's the same amount of skill involved...our brains can only focus on one activity at any given moment meaning that, even though it's for a moment, shifting requires our brains to distract itself from steering the car (or braking for that matter) which in turn makes for slower times. it's incorrect to say that driving manuals means you're a more skilled driver; it just means you know how to shift...fun is subjective and i think that if this topic weren't as debated more people would say that driving faster is more fun...

I have to say I dont know what these guys are driving. I tested both of these cars multiple times before I order the GTI. While the Focus is less expensive and has a cooler boy racer look the stock seats are crap(didn't test the Recaro but they really up the price as they are not a stand alone option). The GTIs manual while not up to Mazda or Honda standards is better then the Focus. The GTI has a real back seat. But the biggest one for me was the ride. The ride quality of the cars are not in the same league. The Focus is brutely hard on anything but the smoothest roads. If you have any loose fillings dont drive the ford or they will come out! I have a few herniated disc and the car gave me a headache after a 15 minute ride. Another plus is the available auto, I have autos but I have to say if I ever was going to by one the GTI's is about as good as they come, it shifts wickedly fast. The GTI rides like a really well built car (think Audi, it is a little softer then 3 series BMW and a Caddy ATS) that handles well. When the car is quick with no detectable torque steer and it sticks in corners. What that means is it is much easier to drive fast then the Focus. The Focus might be better on a smooth track with a pro driver but the GTI will make most anyone a great driver. Oh and about insurance, in NJ the GTI has lower insurance as the car has better safety ratings, though the rates are close. And the GTI is also quicker then the Focus in stoplight racing in both stick and auto as it puts down it power much more evenly. Again much easier to launch. So if you are the pro driver looking to race your car the Focus may be better , but for just about anyone else the GTI is a much, much better car. BTW, if you can afford the performance Pack get it as it makes the car feel like it is on rails, you wont notice the difference in HP but you will notice the difference in handling and braking, it is very impressive.

Honestly the GTI having a DSG option and Focus not having one is honestly a plus for the GTI in my opinion. To make the argument that only true enthusiasts would drive manual is honestly petty and immature. (Well Ford probably said it but that doesn’t make it a plus for the ST). It’s honestly a good thing to have the option of either a manual or a DSG. Plus some disabled people that can drive but can’t use their both legs can get a DSG GTI.

Funny how in the real world it ends up also not even close but in reverse. There is one other thing that is not 'felt' in the USA - Golf sits in a specific position in its' domestic market (EU), so there are quite a few variations and 'offspring' you can't see. Meaning your range isn't wide enough to understand fully why the GTI is like this or that, so you have to make ratings with what you got. For example, in EU we would have Seat Leon Cupra and Skoda Octavia vRS from the same corp meddling into the mix, and with variations of their own. Add Renault Megane, Opel Astra etc. into that and you have plenty to discuss about in detail. You think this Focus is waaay better/cheaper than this GTI? For same or less you can get Seat Cupra 280 with everything (satnav, limited slip diff, dynamic steering, adjustable suspension, LED front/taillights, sunroof, double exhaust etc), looking like and Audi and having 276 hp. On the flip side that same corporation can offer you said Skoda Octavia vRS estate that is still fast, loaded and huge (61 ft³) for lugging things while having pimp rims and whatnot. Suddenly this Focus doesn't look that great overall.

V-Dub Julian Literally just went in rides in both (modded of course) and the gti was a monster; however, I would still give an overall win to the st. While the gti has a sheeker interior, I still like the recaro seats better than even the upgraded, non-plaid lesbo seats in the gti. I also prefer the layout in the st, even though that is something that is dependent upon the person, some may prefer the gti's. The handling is better in the st for sure. Also, I don't care for the issues with the direct injection upgradability in the gti, not to mention the issues with the factory turbo. The exhaust note is somewhat better in the gti depending on whether or not both have a nice exhaust, as the st even with a nice subtle exhaust added, will sound a little higher pitched to me. I still give it to the st. Looks is hands down st; again, that's up to the eyes of the beholder.

Edmunds.com The comparison should have been more fair. Where are the performance figures?? These are subcompact sporty cars, buyers take these to the track. This test is bogus if you cannot include 0-60, .25 mile, some laps, or something. And also, the driving experience is very relative, while the st is more tail happy, that does not mean its driving experience is better. With the performance package, the GTI is very playful as well.

The ST won and, rightfully so really. I test-drove both the ST and GTI... actually test-drove them both 3 times each. The ST won, for similar reason in this video. I do think the date comments are pretty stupid/silly/nonsense however. Of course everybody has their own personal preference/taste of looks. The Focus ST is a decent design, IMHO. I got the ST3 with grey rado wheels and red caliper breaks. I would've had to spend a lot more money...a lot...in order to get that in the GTI as it was part of a package. What is not mentioned in this vid is the fact that the ST3 has these cool interior lights that are LEDs in cup holder, door handles, over feet, and can change the colors...so, THAT'S pretty cool on a date though!! ha.. Also: the traction control can NOT be fully turned off on the GTI and this was absolutely a buzz-kill during all 3 of my test drives! The Recaro front seats are no competition either...the seats in the GTI I found soft, including the bolsters which I didn't like...plaid or not. The Recaro seats are really great. I feel like I'm getting into a sports car every single time I get in my car. Bolsters are big and firm enough to help keep you in your place during spirited driving.

ST is almost the same as it was for the 2013, GTI 'tried' to compete and made a better performance car than the poor attempt to compete it had previously. I look at it more of 'most improved' car type scenario, while it still lags behind the ST and most cars in its segment, it is no longer embarrassingly behind.
Back you're facts up, lol@it lagging behind the st, you must be dreaming these things.

The Gti having a more mature image is bullshit, I've owned many Gti's and own an ST now and every douchebag kid who has a Gti is constantly trying to get me to race. I honestly feel you couldn't go wrong with either car, the vw is more sedated and the focus is more aggressive. Choose which ever you like driving more.

The last time I checked, only the Corolla was matching the Focus in being the world's best selling name plate. Dont mention the all time selling issue because that one would mean adding the ford Escort sales to the Focus to match the times the golf has been in existence. In sales I think the Focus has the Golf owned. Though I must admit the Golf is a great car and I would consider it though I am a Ford fan.
@baseballguy007

KWASHIC Yet notice how many ST's are driving around compared to the GTI. I'm pretty sure most Ford sales are from F-150's (wanna be country boy's; chevy all the way) and Ford Fusion's. I have seen two ST's in my whole life on the street, yet see GTI's every day
@KWASHIC
9 жыл бұрын
I cant argue with that...but remember sales are pushed by all models not by performance models only. Also location matters. Even where i am I see more GTIs than STs. Maybe the focus is helped by hatch and sedan sharing one name plate unlike golf and jetta. But thats also the reason the golf has sold a lot historically more than the escort/focus name.
@danieltubbs5422
9 жыл бұрын
KWASHIC VW has sol over 30,000,000 Golfs since 1974 Vs. 9,200,000 Ford Focus models. Now, if we combine the sales of the Escort we get 29,200,000. To be fair, we need to include the predecessor to the Golf, the Beetle which sold over 21,000,000. So, in short, you are wrong, the Golf by itself has outsold the Escort and Focus and it isn't even close if we throw the Beetle in. BTW. the Escort has been around six years longer than the Golf.
@danieltubbs5422

KWASHIC Ford made 135,000,000,000 last year to VAG 197,000,000,000 Ford sold just over 3.3 million cars worldwide in 2014 and VW sold over 9 million. Your stats are WAY off.

I think you were remiss not to mention the much greater torque-steer that plagues the Focus ST, as well as the wheel-hop it suffers under hard acceleration. Those characteristics would certainly erode the fun and driving experience for me. I'll take the GTI--2-door manual, please.

Easily fixed with tsb for 2013 early 2014 models, or can just upgrade the rear motor mount to Cobb, Steeda, boomba etc. which eliminates wheel hop and reduces torque steer. Not to mention helps car put the down the power better. Stock st can run high 13s.

juan tafoya I own a 2014 mazda 3 GT sedan. Although this vehicle is GREAT in terms of pricing/fuel economy/styling/power......The engine note is just so gay. I hate it. As it revs up it doesnt sound aggressive AT ALL even with an aftermarket catback exhaust system. The interior on the other hand owns both the ST and GTI hands down. The latest mazda connect system is by far one of the BEST out there. So theres a bit of a trade off....those wanting a daily driver yes can choose any of the 3. But those wanting more power, more fun, more engine note pounding your ears as you redline your vehicle--->GTI/ST is the way to go in my opinion.
