Your videos are terrific--thank you! Thanks to your videos, I was able to successfully remove the front CV/axles and turbocharger on my 2002 Jetta TDI. One small note: here in Canada no one knows what an "N10" is. I was able to track it down because you showed what the driver looks like--they use the term "12 point" here, same with the axle nut remover, also "12 point". Thanks again--really appreciate your videos, clear and well done!

great video, but as others have stated you don't need to unbolt the ball joint to replace the axle. just did a 2000 Jetta 1.8t manual and had more than enough room to get the CV axle out without unbolting the ball joint.
@jw18xxx

Yeah I feel all the issues are from most that undo the hub bolt before the triple square bolts. If you do that, all you need to do is whack the axle till it falls. I haven't done this but always thought wtf, why do that when there is obviously enough room. Only way I feel someone couldn't is if the CV drive flange plate, flange and axle are stuck together as mine were. Luckily I was removing the transmission and got it free but the bearings fell out and couldn't get them together for hours but axle was locked up so replacing it.

For anyone trying this save yourself a shit load of time by NOT undoing the balljoint and instead turn the wheel, it will have enough clearance to come out!

You usually have to pull the two bolts on the bottom of the Strut... but I agree, Don't pull the ball joint or you will have to get another alignment.

First of all, he didn't undo the balljoint. I tried to remove the passenger axle on my 96 jetta mt by just turning the wheel and it did not give me enough clearance. In fact the axle almost jammed up on me. I will be removing the three bolts today to allow swing for more room.

2003 Jetta 1.8L turbo 5 spd manual Wolfsburg... I recently replaced the control arms. The only things I detached were the 3 13mm head bolts you loosened, the horizontal bolt at the front of the control arm, the vertical bolt and nut at the rear end of the control arm, the sway bar bolt and the caliper (just for extra room). Sometime during the process, the passenger side flange shaft pulled out of the housing by more than an inch.The plan is to pull the drive shaft per your process and see what's up. It's my understanding this shouldn't happen. The only parts breakdown I have seen for the differential, which I'm not 100% certain is applicable to this model, shows a bolt in the center that appears to secure the flange shaft into the housing.Daytime highs are hitting 104°F/40°C, so I'll be waiting until the weekend before tackling this again. Do you have any guidance/suggestions?
@snoobler
7 жыл бұрын
Turns out the flange bolt that holds the flange into the differential backed out. When we were moving the strut around to get the bits into the control arm, we must have pulled it loose from the differential since the bolt was no longer engaged. Also, it took an M12, not a M10.

Today at school (i`m learning as car mechanic) we had the same job, but on Mk3 Golf, what a pain, you can`t get to these bolts, because of the cv joint rubber design. Also we trained on Vauxhall Zafira, no bolts on gearbox side just slides out with some wiggle.
@jw18xxx
5 жыл бұрын
You have to rotate the axles and get it at a certain rotational angle. Also if on a lift the strut being compressed or wheel jacked up fixes this. I also had a lowered vehicle so axle angle is dumb, if you orientate everything right, I was able to pinch the boot up and use a 3/8 drive and extension. 1/2 drive or impact is damn near impossible

BMAC VAGS hi mate, great video ! bu I have a question that maybe you can answer?! I have am automatic 2005 w Passat here in new Zealand, I have noticed a thudder noise and interference when I lock hard to the left(passenger side), it feels as if something rubs on the turn, not a normal cv joint clicking when worn out. I have brought it to a specialist and he could find no problem with the cv joint, boots or anything else, but this is what he did say in his report, "clean and inspect inner and outer cv joint, both checked O.K. Did notice outer cv joint housing touching shaft on hard lock LHS" so he has that everything is fine with the joint and its not causing any trouble on the car, the joints have been replaced at some stage but are in good condition. but I don't understand why this rubbing is happening if everything is okay with the assembly! I like using a screwdriver to hold the brake disk - saves wear & tear on the transmission gears. (I hadn't thought of that) Not like hammering the axle out of the hub/bearing. Better to remove the brake disk (one bolt) and use a mega gear puller (Harbor freight is your friend) and push the axle out once the ball joints bolts are removed.
